Question:
I have been researching for my friend, thinking about WLS myself

I have the option to hurry up and sign up for BC/BS , but the only plan I can afford is the Youth Blue Plan in Michigan, which has a 1000 dollar deductible, and a 2500 dollar copay maximum. I was thinking that maybe I should diet faithfully for the next 6-8 months and if it doesn't go well, look into WLS. What do you think??? I am 379 lbs. I am 5 "8" and have high BP, asthma, arthritis in my ankles, mild sleep apnea...If I could get a job and save up enough money, I might be able to foot that portion of the insurance. I dunno, maybe Thanks for listening Michelle    — Michelle H. (posted on February 13, 2002)

Hi Michelle, I would go for it....you can always make payments or make some type of deal with the hospital if ins is paying the majority. I'm unsure of your age but I'm sure you want to start living, soon! I applaud your willingness to stick to it on your own, that is an option and well worth serious thought. Best wishes whatever your decision.

Here's what you do: sign up for the plan that covers WLS, find the best doctor in the area, make an appointment for a consultation. You may just have a 6-8 month wait. The docs here have at least a 4 month wait. During the wait time you can do the diet thing. If that works for you and you feel it will be permanent, then fine. If not, then by the time you're ready for WLS (or at least finding out more about it), your appointment will be ready. Good luck and God Bless!

Michelle, do whatever you have to do to have this surgery as soon as you can. My only regret is that I waited so long to have it. I was 370 when I had my rny and I'm still trying to break that 200 pound mark. But even at 220something, I am a new woman! I suffered with sleep apnea, joint disease in my knees and feet, and an irregular heart beat. I was in constant pain...using a cain for support...and considering disability. Now I'm 100% healthy! I'm happier and healthier than I've ever been. I must have heavy bones (lol) because I wear size 16/18 clothes and I'm having a ball shopping the malls every weekend. I bought a pair of sleek, high heel boots to wear with my jeans! Even now I'm a man-magnet....wait till I get to 199!! Be honest with yourself, Michelle, in 6-8 months you'll be 50lbs. heavier. Diets don't work for folks like us. Beg...borrow...steal...do whatever it takes.
