Question:
Has anyone lost their period before WLS surgery?

I'm 10 days late with my period!! I'm having Lap RNY on Friday, 1/11/02, I've taken 6 over the counter pregnancy tests all negative and I took a blood test on Saturday results are in tomorrow. I'm almost sure I'm not pregnant, but I've always been regular. If there's anyone out there that this has happened to please post an answer!!! Thank you    — Joselyn B. (posted on January 7, 2002)

Have you gained a significant amount of weight these last few months prior to surgery? If so..that can cause your cycle to get out of whack. Mine did. Fat cells produce estrogen... Also, could be nerves.

Stress can cause fluctuations in the menstrual cycle. If you are stressed out about surgery and other things it may be that. But don't worry it will come back with a vengeance after surgery! :) Make sure you tell your surgeon if it hasn't hit by Friday. Good luck!

I agree with the other poster that it could very well be stress. Actually, mine was late post-op (by about two weeks) from physical stress, I guess. Good luck!

I am 16 years old, and started my period at 8 years old, in the last year or so I have been having problems with my period, and in the last 6 months or so I haven't had one at all. Even the birth control pills my doctor prescribed aren't working. She contributes it to my weight, and says I have dyfuntional uterine bleeding, one of the risk factors of which is obesity. I am hoping that after this surgery my period will start to come back and get more regular. I wouldn't worry about it too much, but I would visit a doctor to be safe.

Ever looked into PCOS? It is the reason I had this surgery, check it out: www.pcossupport.org or www.soulcysters.com or read my page. PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) is a syndrome, Meaning not everyone has the same symptoms, you don't even have to have cysts on your ovaries! So the name is a tad bit misleading. It is something worth looking into, as even if you do lose the weight & your period returns, there are still issues you will need to address. PCOS is not cureable, but is treatable with different methods. A good book is PCOS: The Hidden Epidemic by Samuel Thatcher, MD.
