Donna, I am eventually going to try to conceive. I am only 4.5 wks out now, but according to my research and my doctors (both OB/GYN and WLS), as long as I wait 12-24 months after surgery so that my weight is stabilized and I have a good handle on my nutritional intake, it shouldn't be a problem. They have told me that I will probably be a high risk pregnancy due to the nutritional aspects, but had I gotten pregnant at 316 I would have been high risk also. I have spoken to several people in person and online who have had children or known others who have had children post op and as long as you wait AT LEAST 12 months, there seems to be no problem

Donna- I am 24 years old. I have a beautiful one year old daughter. I have not had surgery yet (spring hopefully) but I will DEFINATELY want to conceive another child. I will also definately wait at least 12 months or until my weight stabalizes. Good luck!

Donna, hugs back to you! I have had a hard time finding others who want to have kids after WLS. Everybody I know is past childbearing age. YES, I hope to have kids one day. I am 5 weeks post op and my surgeon said I absolutely can conceive but must wait until 18 mos. out at a MINIMUM. I will have to be followed very closely by both my surgeon and my OB/GYN. I had a rough time with my first baby three years ago as far as losing weight not gaining. It is a concern I have. My first baby was almost two mos. premature, so I wonder should I even try. my OB/GYN is of the belief that if I am going to have kids after this, I better do it soon (I'm 30) because she says age added onto the other stressors could make it worse. The man in my life right now says if we end up getting married he doesn't want me to die for a child, he would rather be childless or adopt. I would love to talk to you more about this, please get in touch with me at [email protected]. Best of luck to you! Amy

Donna, I too am planning on having another child after surgery. In fact, that is one of the main reasons for me having this surgery. Being overweight has caused my period to cease and I have been advised by my OB/GYN to lose at least 100 pounds before I try to become pregnant again. I'm 25 years old and have one beautiful son, Dylan. Email me anytime at [email protected]

Hi, I would like to have a baby too after my weight loss, the dr said to wait a year before getting pregnant they also said that after surgery many women become very fertile too even if they were never fertile before..so i am going on birth control for a year and then i will stop the pill and let nature take its course.. good luck to you..

I too an looking forward to getting pregnet after about a year. I am about 8 weeks post op. I have no children and have been married for over a year. If I would have got pregnet before surgery I would have been high risk, so it would be no differant if I did it after a year.

donna, i am 10 weeks post-op and i am anxiously waiting for a year to pass so that i can try to get pregnant. Infertility is one of the reasons I decided to have WLS. I am 30 yrs old and have been diagnosed with "Unexplained Infertility". My husband and I haven't used protection for at least 8 years! I pray this WLS will help me! (I am currently 1 mo post op).

Count me in on that wanting a baby list!
I have PCOS that is connected with my weight (which came first...I don't know!). I could get pregnant but just not make it very far. I had 7 miscarriages. We decided to adopt and while we were in the process I got pregnant and somehow managed to carry the pregnancy far enough along. SO>>> I have sons that are 6 months apart...LOL!
I had always wanted a large family, so I'm very interested in trying to conceive or adopt again. Adoption was so expensive for us I don't know if that is an option again. I am 6 weeks post op and feel all this presure to loose the weight and conceive at the earliest possible moment because I am 38 and the clock is ticking!
What I am most afraid of, though, is accidently getting pregnant too soon! It would be such an ironic twist! I haven't been on birth control for 10 years so now I'm in the unusual possition of trying to figure out what birth control to use. My surgeon advised against the pill because he's afraid about the absorption issue. I don't want to screw up my hormones with th injections or implants and condoms aren't high on my dh's list. I'm getting kind of nervious about this! I'm calling my PCP later this week to try to schedule an appointment but you generally have to wait 3 weeks to see her for a non-emergency.
This whole fertility issue is just blowing my mind. Who would think after so many years of fertility treatments (and tons of money) I'd be trying to PREVENT a pregnancy!
