Question:
Over 40 who had an open RNY how long did it take you to go back to work (sedintary)?

I am 40 yo with diabetes on insulin, asthma.. had pneumonia a few times. My health problems have forced me to deplete my sick and vacation time at work. I am hoping for the best, minimal complications, speedy recovery. Would love to hear from post-op folks in similar situations who were able to return to work in a couple of weeks or so. I work at a computer 95% of my day. Thanks!    — SARose61 (posted on December 3, 2001)

Hi. I am over 40 and teach first grade in a public school. I started getting my classroom ready (minus lifting or moving furniture) at 4 weeks. I got tired easily. Had required inservice days at 5 weeks..lots of sitting...I was fine... At 6 weeks the kids returned and I was able to manage. I was tired all the time, but it was ok. Best of luck. I had open RNY.

I am 47 years old and had open RNY on 8/17/01. I am an office manager, and like you spend much of my time on the computer. I was out of work for one week but went back to work part time for the next two. Fortunately, I was able to go back to work on my own schedule - I went to work after I woke up naturally, and went home when I was tired. Usually 4-5 hours a day for the first two weeks.

I am a way over 40 bookkeeper. I had an incident free open RNY and went back to work pt after three weeks, full time with extreme fatigue after that. I am into my seventh week and now work normally.

I had open RNY and returned to work 14 days after my surgery. I pretty much worked my full schedule except I did wait to go into work until I woke up naturally. In addition, I left a little earlier each day. I probably worked 35 hours the first week and full time after that. Please remember that although you can sit and work at a computer, filing or doing anything where you might have to bend or lift is pretty difficult. Good luck.
