Question:
Can I have fresh squeezed OJ post op?
We have 2 orange trees in our yard and we LOVE to make fresh squeezed OJ. Was wondering if it is something that will make a person dump? Can you guys that are post op tell me about your experiences with fresh OJ? — Kim B. (posted on November 26, 2001)

I was avoiding juices because of the sugar. My blood work showed a bit low
for potassium, and my pCP suggested a cup of OJ a day. I get in a cup
perhaps every other day. We are buying the fresh squeezed type since it
tastes best to me. I dont dump but even if you do a cup or half a cup
should be fine and good for you. Your lucky to live in a warm area and pick
your own citrus.

I was told not to have oj for at least 2 weeks and then it should be
diluted. I think bob has a point. Stay away from anything witht he sugars.
I shiver just thinkinig about it.
Your oranges will be there for u when ur ready. good luck

Undiluted orange juice makes me dump. Diluted OJ, if I drink it slow over
the course of an hour or so, goes down fine. Hope the info. helps.

I was not given any restrictions regarding OJ. Early post op I drank it
every day and had no problems. I was at that "craving something a
little sour" stage and OJ worked great for that. Now, I had to search
for just the right brand. MOST brands are just too sweet and I can not
drink those. However, I found that Minute Maid pulp free was just a tart
enough and I love it. Now, you won't be needing to know specific brands,
but it might help to know that you might tolerate the juice better if the
oranges aren't too sweet. Happy picking! Shelley

You are so fortunate to have orange trees. I envy you.
If the sugar does'nt make you dump, I'd go for it! I love OJ and make mine
VERY deluted. But then I did "before" WLS too. Unfortunately I
have very low potassium and have to have liquid potassium so I put it in
the OJ. Now OJ does'nt taste that good because of it. ;) By the way if
anyone else has to do this I found that Minute Maid' s Orange Passion (with
calcium) hides the hidious flavor of liquid potassium the best of any.
Oranges trees... how lucky!

hi Kim. We have a satsuma orange tree, ruby red grapefruit, blood orange.
lime and lemon, so I know where you are coming from! I juice mine and
haven't had a problem.. except juice is high in calories and you don't get
the fiber of the fruit (at least I don't, I strain it) so I try to juice
some, and limit the juice to one glass a day, then eat some without
juicing. Good luck!

We are lucky to have orange trees here as well. I avoided juice and eating
oranges last year like the plague because my doctor warned me not to drink
orange juice. This made me really sad because I used to love to go out in
the back yard on a crisp evening to pick a fresh orange and eat it. I
suggest going to the store and looking at a carton of juice to see the
grams of sugar per serving. You will be surprised! If you are going to
drink it I agree with the other posters that suggested diluting it.
