Question:
question about flu shot before surgery
Should I consider getting a flu shot now? I am never sick but my mom mentioned today that I might want to get one since I will be having surgery in January. She thinks surgery might weaken me at first. I've never even had the flu before and , like I said, I am never sick. — Kim B. (posted on October 31, 2001)

Kim, Get the shot! If you say that you "never get sick" then
surely you will catch the flu either right before or right after your
surgery! LOL! Flu is the pitts.. do whatever you can to be as healthy as
possible going into surgery, and if you can do something NOW that will
safeguard your health after surgery, then by all means, do it!

I got my flu shot last week. I swore last year after my 3rd annual bout
with the illness that I will forever listen to my mom's advice and
"just get the darn shot". My surgery date is December 10. I
worried first about getting sick pre-op and having my date postponed and I
also worried that I would get sick soon after my surgery (my history is I
always seem to be ill the week after New Years) and not be physically
strong enough to fight it. The shot was painless, I had a slightly achy arm
for a couple of days. But it was definitely worth the effort if not for
anything but the fact that this is one less thing to worry about. Good Luck
and go for it!
