I'm so afraid of a pill getting stuck. — [Anonymous] (posted on October 20, 2001)

It gets better with time, but at first, you need ensure that you don't
swallow anything larger than a pencil eraser tip. I usually split larger
pills into three pieces and slowly swallow each piece. I guarantee - you
do NOT want to get a pill caught. It is excruciating!

My dr. said we could put it with applesauce to help pills go down. Not
"horse" (huge) pills though ... split them (and they WILL taste
nasty!), but with applesauce it will be somewhat better.

Pills really should mostly dissolve in the pouch and not try to go through
the stoma. After the initial swelling and trauma have gone down, most
people can swallow normal pills easily.

I was taking Percocet for pain the day after my RNY and never had any
problems. It is a fairly large tablet...larger than an aspirin. I resumed
my regular medications a day later, tablets and one in capsule form, again
without difficulty. Good luck!

My surgeon says as long as the pill fits over top of a dime with room to
spare you should be alright.

My doctor recommends nothing larger than a regular M & M and no hard
coated pills.
