Question:
Do natural juices make anyone else sick?

I thought we could drink natural juices after surgery. I am 10 weeks post op and I love juice because it is the only good tasting sweet drink that I can drink. But I rarely drink them because they make me feel awful afterwards. I am very careful to make sure they say 100% natural juice and no extra sugars added. So why do I feel like death warmed over afterwards?    — Allie M. (posted on July 27, 2001)

Even if there is no sugar added, natural fruit juices still typically have a lot of sugar. Try cutting the juice with water. Or how about crushing some ice in the blender and "eating" the juice/ice combo with a spoon. You are probably mildly dumping. Good luck!

Apple juice makes me feel disgusting. OJ makes me thirstier. Stay away from them if they make ya feel bad..I prefer sugar free koolaid anyway :)

I stick with Crystal Light. Fruit Juices, even all natural ones. are loaded with sugar. Dumping isn't much of a problem for me. But, fruit juices do make me somewhat nauseous.

Only orange juice makes me dump. And I mean dump big time. It was my first dumping experience and not one I wanted to repeat. I can eat oranges, but not drink the juice. I tired to take some chewable calcium citrate supplements once and had the same reaction. I couldn't figure it out until I checked the ingredients and found that there was orange juice concentrate powder in them. Never heard of such a thing. Got rid of those in a hurry. How anyone can WILLINGLY consume something that they know is going to make them dump is beyond me. Accidently is bad enough!

I absolutely LOVE orange juice. It has been my favorite drink since about 6 weeeks post. I, however, cannot drink apple juice or grape juice. As far as the natural sugar in orange juice, it obviously doesn't seem to bother me (not to mention the 112 lbs gone since 1/8/01!) Isn't it funny how we are all so different? Shelley

Even a year after my surgery I still have problems with juices, especially orange juice. Like others here have mentioned, I find diluting the juice with water and ice helps. I need it cut with at least 1/3 water, half water and half juice works the best.

Any juice -- of any kind -- makes me dump in the worst way. It is all the sugar in there. Natural sugar or added sugar, it doesn't matter to me ...

I am 4 weeks post-op and I use the baby apple juice as it has less sugar. It seems to settle and I'm drinking a lot of it becasue of that reason.

4-12-02 Hi! I'm 7 wks post op and remember tasting juice for the first time after surgery in the hospital. It tasted like syrup to me! I still cut the juice 50/50 with water.

I had a Distal Bypass and therefor don't have dumping. I enjoy juices if they aren't too strong. At about 3 months I got a juicer so I could mix vegetable juice. S it may depend on what type of surgery you have.

I forgot to mention I am 3 weeks post op with no problems with juice. The doctor However told me not to drink them because I don't need the sugar(I'm diabetic)

Our bodies realy don't know "the rules". It just recognizes it as sugar. Always keep in mind, if it's enough sugar to make you sick, it's enough to make you fat again, even if it doesn't happen til 2 yrs out. I can't do juice either, except so dilute it just tastes like dirty water. My doc gave us a 6g per serving limit, which leaves out every real juice I've ever seen. Even NSA apple is double that.

I still can't drink apple juice 6 months out. It just makes me dump horribly. I don't know the reason; it's just a no-no food for me.

I am now four and a half weeks post op. The nutritionalist told me, while in the hospital, that juice was ok as long as I was getting the protein I needed each day. After I meet that requirement, there is not much room left for juice. However, apple and grape are ok for me. I cut the grape 50/50 with water and buy generic apple, as it is not as sweet tasting. So far I have not had any problems. I have been enjoying Oceanspray's no sugar added pink grapfruit and V8. Those two do not cause me any problems and both are very healthy. Currently, I am having 3 oz of one or the other for breakfast.

I haven't had any trouble with apple juice, perhaps because it's because I dilute them with water and ice before drinking it. You may want to try this. I had my surgery on 6/18/03 and I think I'm just going with what works for me because what I was told to do is the opposite of me getting any food in my stomach.

Apple juice is one of my fav juices, but it all just seems to sweet for me now. I have next some water with it,but it still seems to sweet for me. I think my taste has changed. I am post-op 2 weeks.

Even if its watered down, no sugar added or 100% natural, I dump on it. I can eat fresh fruit (no peels) with no problems. And eating the fruit gives you extra fiber. ~Sidney~ Open RNY 10-23-02 down 120+

Apple juice is the juice that got me through all my complications, 2 surgeries, 3 ambulance rides and 8 hospital stays in 4 months. I still drink at least 2, 12 oz glasses a day. It quenches my thirst and I do not experience dumping like I do with 100% cranberry juice. Open RNY, 12/10/03

It took me several months post-op before I could handle fruit juices well. Either the fruit sugars got me and caused dumping symptoms or the acid in them got me with a little acid reflux. After about 6 mos. post-op I got where I could handle them with little or no problem. Try fruit popsicles. There are some fine no-sugar added ones on the market now.

Apple juice has been the one thing that I could not handle. I am one month post op. It made my stomach cramp up really bad. I was disapointed because it was the one liquid that seem to take the dryness out of my mouth.

YES! Apple nectar makes me dump. lol Doesn't matter if it has no sugar added because fruits have... fructose! lol Try watering it down. If that doesn't work... then you may have to lay off the juices. Sorry!
