Question:
What does this statement mean?
My exclusions for Cigna PPO states "Any loss, expense, or charge which results from weight control or any treatment of obesity not caused by an organic condition." Does anyone know what they mean by "organic condition"? Does this mean that they may possibibly cover the surgery? — R B. (posted on July 25, 2001)

Two issues here. They have excluded treatment for obesity. Most of us are
"morbidly obese" which is a different disease than obesity, so
you may be able to beat the exclusion on that ground. An organic condition
is another ailment or physical issue which has caused the obesity, say, for
example, you have a tumor which has caused weight gain. I am not sure how
they would deal with a physician who said the weight gain was due to an
abnormally low metabolism, but I'm guessing they would say that's not
organic. -Kate-
