Question:
depression

I need to post anonymously because my daughter is also on this site and I don't want her to know that I'm so depressed I could cry. She is still pre-op and I had my surgery two months ago. At that time I was so happy about having the surgery, I just don't know why I'm feeling this way. Does anyone else feel this way post-op?    — [Anonymous] (posted on June 30, 2001)

Absolutely! However I don't know how much of it was the bypass and how much was me. You see I'm on antidepresents and I did'nt take them after surgery because I was worried that the big ole horse pills would get stuck. ;) Anyway, find a counselor. "Perhaps" you will need antidepresants, or maybe just someone to talk to. I had the Open RNY and that is really tough on the body especially when you are in your mid 40's. My guess is your depression won't last to long (if it is brought on by the surgery). But you really should see someone who is "qualified". Hang in there. When I started "physically" feeling better my emotional well being improved too. But seeing you are two months post op, you really need to see someone. (My depression only lasted a couple weeks, maybe three). There are medicines to help us, please find something (and someone) to help you. Life is so short that we need to enjoy every moment we can.

I have heard/read on the internet that it is very common to have a bad bout of depression after wls. I suffer from bi-polar anyway and can understand how you feel. Just remember that it should go away very soon and if it doesn't get help from your physician or another qualified professional. You can email me if you want and ask anything you want and I will give you honest answers. Good luck! And I am sure it will go away soon. Marilyn

YES, I TOTALLY KNOW TWHAT YOUR FEELIING. I WAS ASKED TO TAKE PROZACK, BUT I CHOOSE NOT TOO, AND FOR ME IT HAS HELPED. BUT WHAT I FIND IS THAT AFTER A MAJOR SURGERY IT IS COMMON. WHAT EVER YOU DO, TRY TO KEEP YOUR SELF FULL OF LIQUIDS. FOR SOME REASON I THINK MY DEPRESSION WAS DUE TO LACK OF POTASIMMUN, AND FLUIDS. TRY TO STAY BUSY ALSO. THIS IS JUST WHAT WORKED FOR ME, PLUS A LOT OF PRAYS, AND YOU HAVE MINE.
