Question:
Can low blood pressure keep you from having WLS?
I have high cholesteral, sleep apnea, swelling of the joints, and others but now I worry that because I have low blood pressure I might not be able to have this surgery. — Happy B. (posted on April 7, 2001)

I am 10 days post op and I have low blood pressure. Pre-op my surgeron had
me monitor it and try to keep it at 100 over 60. I rarely could even
though I was stressed and so forth. In the hospital, During my hospital
stay it ran about 85 over 40 and although it is cause for concern, I also
let them know that was normal for me. With me, the worst thing I had to be
careful of was light headedness so I made it a rule not to rise up without
a nurse or other person in the room. I did a lot of reassuring that this
was normal for me and verbalized what I knew about my problems and how to
handle the situation. When the nurses heard that, they were at a little
more ease with me. There was never any talk of cancellation or post poning
my surgery due to los Blood pressure

I have low blood pressure (normal is 90/70) and I had open RNY on Jan 19.
My first night was in ICU, because of probable sleep apnea. It was a good
thing too, because the morphine pump caused my blood pressure to drop to
70/35. They had to take me off the morphine until it rose (which increased
my pain and was bitch!) but it came back up to normal and I was put back on
the morphine pump. The nurse said "Try not to push to button so much,
honey." !! No problems during the rest of the hospital stay nor since
I got home. Best of luck to you!
