Question:
How has the surgery affected type 2 diabetics?

According to my doctor 85% are effectively cured no longer needing medicine
or insulin, 10% are improved and the remaining 5% are unchanged.
Thats my reason for surgery, to stop the diabetic complications I am
having.

Before I had my open RNY I was on pills twice a day and my sugar was still
going up. Since the surgery I have not needed to take any pills at all.
My count stays in the 80's now with no problems. Donna WV

Hi! My type II diabetes has completely disappeared. I'm fifteen days
short of my first anniversary, 125 pounds gone forever, and my diabetes
disappeared entirely (along with my sleep apnea, high cholesterol, and
about 10 points off my blood pressure) in the first six months. My PCP was
sore amazed, and pleased ... as was I!

Preop, I was taking Glucophage and Diabeta and my blood sugars were still
in the 200 range. I have been off my diabetic medications since the day of
surgery, one year ago, and my blood sugars are consistently between 80-90.
My surgeon stated that approximately 90% of Type II diabetics are
symptom-free following surgery (I had a proximal RNY). Good luck!

I had Open RNY in October, 2000. I had been taking Glucophage, Rezulin and
Glynase oral meds and my sugars were still almost always high (over 200).
Immediately after surgery I was taken off all diabetes meds and within 8
weeks I no longer had high blood sugar readings at all. Now I am
consistently around 85. It's been WONDERFUL and I hope your results are
equally as great. Good Luck to you!!
