Question:
Has anyone had Fobi pouch and not lost weight?
I've been reading about plateaus and weightloss not being garanteed. I'm going to be having the Fobi pouch surgery soon and I was wondering if anyone else that has had this particular type surgery and not lost any weight. — Lorraine L. (posted on February 10, 2001)

Well, I had the Fobi pouch on 12/8/99 Dr. John Husted in Nashville, TN. I
have lost todate 208 pounds.. My beginning weight was 367 now 159 I'm 14
months post-op.. Well, my choice after 8 months of extensive research
was FOBI pouch.. With a proven tract record with 80-100% of weight loss
and no regain.. the pouch does NOT stretch back out because The pouch is
actually transected away from the rest of the stomach. A piece of
intestine is placed between the pouch and the transected stomach to prevent
a gastro-gastric fistula (the stomach from growing to the pouch). The
pouch is truly vertically oriented using the lesser curvature of the
stomach. The Fobi pouch is a more difficult operation to perform that is
why most surgeons perform a conventional gastric bypass. The Fobi pouch
will not stretch over time. At the time of surgery the pouch is ~1oz, when
the pouch matures it is ~1-1.5oz. This was my MAIN consideration.. I
never wanted to regain the weight back.. and I didn't want my pouch to
stretch.. I'm very happy with this form of surgery and to answer your
question I personally have not heard of anyone not loosing their desired
weight, of course the Fobi pouch is a tool like any other WLS and I suppose
you could abuse the protocol just like other forms of WLS. Follow your
surgeons dietary advice and you will do just great..

If a person "grazes" or has lots of sugar or high-cal foods, it's
possible to not lose, Fobi or not. This wonderful tool can be
"gotten" around by persons who don't dump on sugars, or who eat
every hour...
It's up to us, to follow the guidelines, to make this work for us. Good
luck in your journey!
