Question:
I am 3 weeks post op, are salads ok to eat?
I have been eating vegetables, chicken, some deli meat and have tolerated well. I would love to have a cruncy salad. — Kim F. (posted on January 30, 2001)

My surgeon progresses us faster than most, and yet raw fruits and veggies
are the last thing we are to add -- I suggest you wait another week

I had to wait 8 weeks post-op before doing salads, and even then I took it
easy. Raw fruits and vegies are hard to digest (especially the skin). And
lettuce can be a problem as well. Just take it slow. I crave Greek salads
from my favorite Greek salad restaurant, but I can only do 1/4 the quantity
as before. Also, remember, that while vegies and salad are healthy
choices, they do not offer the protein we need. So don't fill up on salad
until after you've had your protein.

I am 5 weeks post op and just graduated to cooked veggie and soft fruits.
I would wait until you are 6 weeks post-op for anything raw.

I had lap RNY surgery by one of the most recognized surgeons in the field.
He allows simple lettuce and tomato salads (without any other
"crunchy" vegetables) when his patients advance to a soft diet at
3 weeks post-op. The rule of thumb is still: take small bites, chew
thoroughly, eat slowly, and stop as soon as you feel full...remember that
salad has virtually no protein value, and protein should always come first
in your food choices. However, I will say that that first salad was the
best!...and still is my favorite food. Best wishes!
