Question:
What do self insured mean?

I've had my surgery 3.5 months ago. However, what is it meant by a self insured employer or company. Like a lot of people, my insurance changed at the beginning of the year. It seems people have trouble with approvals and being "self insured".    — Jan M. (posted on January 25, 2001)

Hi! I have insurance through my husband's employer. He works for the city, and they are self-insured. The city has a company that administrates the health plans, but the city is the one that actually pays the bills, as Barb mentioned below. I was approved for surgery in less than 2 weeks, so I don't know if what you have heard about self-insured not approving WLS is true. It certainly wasn't in my case : )
