Question:
Will I still be able to drink liquids with a straw after surgery?
I have very sensitive teeth and need to use a straw when drinking cold liquids. Will this be ok after surgery? (RNY) — Kim F. (posted on September 21, 2000)

I know that at St. Lukes here in Phoenix they have us drink out of a
toddlers sippy cup for a few days and we eat with a baby spoon at first as
well.

To what I have heard you cant use them cause it puts air in your stomach
and can cause you pain.

I'm 11 months post op and use a straw all the time with no
problems.

The surgeons don't want you to drink from a straw because you take in too
much air. Instead they ask you to take small sips from a cup.

I just had to answer because I was sipping my slimfast through a straw as I
read my e-mail this morning. Yes you can use a straw after RNY. I had mine
6/23/00 and I think I do better with the straw (less air swallowed). Good
Luck! I have been very pleased with my decision to have surgery and I hope
you will be too.
