Question:
What is a PFT test?
A PFT test is required for pre-op, can anyone tell me what type of test this is and what is it for. Also what is involved in a GI series? Thanks, Kim — Kim F. (posted on August 25, 2000)

A PFT is a Pulmonary Funtion Test, it involves you breathing in and out of
a tube that is conected to a comupter and it evaluates different breathing
cycles. A G.I. series involes you drinking a special dye that can be seen
going down your esophagus while your being X-rayed, its a pretty cool thing
to watch, but if your having endoscopy, thats alittle more evasive and your
usually sedated for that...I hope I was able to help.

Hi Kim, PFT is a pulmonary function test. They give you a couple of squirts
of an inhaler and then you have to blow into a machine. The GI series may
be an upper GI? They have you swallow some fizzy stuff to inflate your
stomach and then you drink barium while the MD take xrays of your GI
system. Hope this helps!
