Question:
Could anyone offer suggestions for the problem I am having with certain foods? I had
RYN about 2 months ago. I have had 1 endoscopy performed due to the part of my pouch which empties had narrowed. Right after the procedure was performed I seemed to be better for several weeks and could tolerate most foods. Within the last week or so I have not been able to tolerate many foods especially for my evening meal and I eat a few bits and immediately I get sick and vomit phelgm and continue to vomit until the food I have eaten usually comes back up. I can eat pudding, bananas,Sugar-free ice cream, blended soup,sALAD,squash, peas, crackers, Cheez Its and Cheetos. Usually for lunch I have been eating crackers or cheez Its simply because I did not want to get sick at work and they are the one thing I no that will not make me sick. I can not eat most meats(sometimes I have been able to eat chicken or hamburger but not recently) and bread is not very good anymore and I can not eat a bagel. Please offer suggestions. I have tried to eat small amounts and slowly but it is very discouraging to me to continue to throw up since this is not one of my favorite things to do now or even before I had surgery. — [Anonymous] (posted on August 18, 2000)

I agree with the previous post, I have heard of people who have had to have
the opening enlarged more than once. One other point, however, I think the
majority of us, including me, can't eat much bread. I can only eat 1/2
slice of bread at a time & wouldn't even THINK of trying to eat a
bagel. Just that idea makes my stomach hurt! I am 4 months post op from
open rny distal. Good luck to you!

I am 5 months post-op. I had a small pouch gastric bypass. To date I have
lost #110. From 320# to 210#. I feel fine most of the time. I have had
problems with tolerating foods. So much to the point that I would rather
not eat.I have slowed down to vomiting only 4-5 times a week. I never
seem to feel hungry. I know I should have already had an endoscopy but was
too stubborn thinking it would interfere with my weight loss. But finally
I am at the point where if I am ever going to eat close to normal that I
should go ahead and have it done. I am suffering on protein minimums. I
too would rather get my protien from milk and cheeses. I cannot stomach
protien drinks or bars. I am finally worried to the point to go ahead and
set up my appointment.

I had a Lap proximal RNY approximately 10 months ago. In the beginning I
had trouble eating more than a few bites and my most difficult meal was
dinner. I threw up twice (the food I had tried to eat and mucus). When I
spoke with my clinic they explained that the previous meal was still in the
pouch and so there was no room for the next meal. The mucus is the body's
way of trying to moisten the food and get it to move out of the pouch. Try
soups and very moist foods. If it doesn't get better give your clinic a
call.
