Question:
Stomach Flu. What happens when people who have had Gastric Bypass get the
stomach flu?? Is it more serious after a gastric bypass? Do you have to see a doctor? — Donna H. (posted on August 18, 2000)

Since I have diabetes my immune system is compromised and after the vbg I
strongly reccommend getting a flu shot...they only cost like $10.00 and it
helps prevent a rip roaring gut wrenching bad feeling flu. Seriously my
boss(got his flu shot too) & I were the only ones here out of 4 dept.
last year...everyone else out for 4 days or more with the flu!!!Prevention
is the key.

I asked my surgeon this same question before I had my WLS. He said that
the only difference is that it is harder to get in large amounts of fluids
after WLS, so it is easier to get dehydrated when we have some kind of
stomach virus. So, if you do get a stomach virus, you have to be very
careful to get in as much fluids as you can.

I agree with Barb & Lynn.. Just make sure you stay hydrated.. I'm
like Barb though.. before my WLS Surgery I had repeated pneumonia an
pleurisy, colds flu's, etc.,. my health was a wreck.. HOWEVER, I'm very
proud to say in eight months no colds, flu's, and lung related problems
what so ever. MY heath is the best it has been in 30 years.. I do take
my yearly flu shot and my PCP gave me a pneumonia shot last November
because of my pulmonary fibrosis.
