Question:
I tested low for B12 and high for folic acid.
My B12 came back as only 148 when the range is between 199 and 732. I want to start taking something for it right away. The doctor wants to meet with me but I wasnt able to get an appointment until Sept. 6. Any suggestions on what I should do until then? I also tested high (19.1) for folic acid (2.8-13.5). The pharmacist thought this was unusual. I havent been taking any supplements besides 1-2 Flintstones vitamins per day. Now that Im showing signs of deficiencies I would like to start taking something a little more powerful. But what does a high Folic acid reading mean and how am I suppose to take a complete vitamin without getting more of that in? — [Anonymous] (posted on August 9, 2000)

Call your surgeon notify him/her first.. Your surgeon may instruct you
to call you PCP's office ask request you be started on B-12 injections
once a month.. Usually the nurses give these and you don't need an
appt.. My PCP does them walk-in basis 9am -11am daily.. Worth a call, and
you will be ahead of the game before your next appointment..

You can get separate Vit B12 supplements at big super markets or health
food stores, try like 50 mcg a day. Dont worry about a high Folic acid of
19, it is non toxic.
Be sure to follow up with your surgeon, he may want to do more blood work,
give you a shot of B12 or check the blood levels later, after a period of
time of oral supplement. (i.e. this internet advice is not a substitution
for real medical hands on care)
