Question:
Do you have noticiably drier skin and especially hair after roux en y?
Never had a problem with this before and am a little concerned about it now.My hair is almost brittle. Doesn't seem to be getting better yet. Blood work recently was normal.Am about 8 months post op. Will this improve over time? What exactly is causing it? Anyone? — michelle T. (posted on January 6, 2000)

Michelle, for about 6 weeks I had very dry skin. I didn't notice it so
much with my hair, but geez was my skin dry. It still is a little bit, but
when I started the b12 and iron it seemed to ease up a bit. I still use
tons of lotion.

Are you takig plenty of protein supplement and dry Vit E? With RNY, those
are 2 of the nutrients that come up short. Nothing will alleviate the full
side effects of rapid wt loss (though new clohtes HELP), but supplemented
protein and DRY Vit E will gradually cut it back.

Hi Michelle: Yes, to both. And, I take Vit E, protein, and a host of
other vitamins and supplements. I'm sure it's a combination of things,
like the decreased fluids we're taking in, the decrease in calories, fats,
along with it being a side effect of rapid weight loss. I'd rather be dry
then carrying around the 87 pounds I've lost, however. Good luck, and God
bless us all! Jaye Carl, open proximal RNY 7-29-99, I'm melting!

I notice this too. It's about 7 months for me but I just assummed it would
stop as the weight loss slows down and eventually stops. It's interesting
to see how subtly that is starting to happen. I hope I will be able to get
another 25 pounds off before I level off but my appetite is really
increasing these days and I know I'm eating a little more overall than I
was the first 6 months. But I can't say the hair and skin have been a big
problem yet - just noticeable.
Feel free to e-mail me if you want to compare any further notes along the
way.

I rub my body down with baby oil after every shower, before I dry off with
the towel. This not only helped the dryness, but also seemed to reduce the
appearance of the wrinkly skin.
