Question:
I am very concerend about what you can eat the first two weeks or so.
Is their anything I can do to prepare for the first few weeks before I have my surgery. What should I go buy and have in the house before I get home. The main concern is will the foods be correctly balanced with the proper vitamins and diet. — Steve M. (posted on November 28, 1999)

I had lap gastric bypass done on 11/22. I'm on my 6th day. I think every
doctor is different, I was told for the first two weeks I could only have
clear broth and jello. So thats what I've been eating. As far as drinking I
can drink anything thats clear and sugar free ex. apple juice (natural
sugar) crystal lite, water. So if u want to stock up be4 I'd tell ya to get
*broth cubes in every flavor they come cause after 2weeks on broth your
going to want a change in flavor, *apple juice, * sugar free jellos and *
crystal lite. About the correct amount of vitamins...they have u take
vitamins and all that so u get the proper amount. Good luck to you!! Keep
us posted.

I am also preop. I bought all different broths (fat free of course), sugar
free jello, crystal light, etc. I also got some liquid multi-vitams plus
iron and a powder protein drink mix from GNC. I thought I would rather get
the stuff and have it here rather then depend on someone to get it for me
once I am home.

First week just clear liquids, 7th day start full liquids. You will need
about 68 ozs of liquids for the first 3 weeks. This lets the stomach heal
real easy. Get a couple of boxes of (sugar free) Carnation Instant
Breakfast) when you are on full liquid you can use this to get protein with
6 tablespoons of NONFAT DRY MILK. This will give you about 10.5 grams of
protein per 1/2 cup. Also on full liquid you can add 1/2 cup of the DRY
MILK to sugar free pudding and 2cups of skim milk for 9.5 grams of protein.

Get some sugar free popsicles or juice-pops(no sugar added). The hardest
thing during the first couple weeks is to get enough fluids. Nutrition is
important, but your fluid intake is more important. The popsicles will
help you get in your fluids, and encourage you to take it slow. Good Luck!

Each surgeon is different, so you really need to consult with them on this.
I myself was on a full iquid diet for three weeks. But I have heard of
others who could eat soft foods before they left the hospital. My surgeon
gave me a booklet which contained everything I would need to know in it.
Check with them to see if they do also.
