Question:
Would I have a problem getting my insurance to approve surgery for morbid obesity?
I have this insurance and it says that they will not cover any services related to management or treatment of any overweight or obesity conditions. However, it doesn't not say anything about morbid obesity. Would I have a problem of getting this surgery approved? — Stacy P. (posted on August 4, 1999)

What insurance co do you have? I have Pacificare of Oregon and
was denied the first time, appealed and was denied a second time.
Due to my weight, I had avoided doctors most of my teen life and up
to about two years go. I still never really went to them unless I
was very sick (yearly bronchial (sp) infection..ick). I have hitched
up my pants and begun the fight again, properly this time with all
the information found on this site (as well as the support!!). So, if
you want the best possible chances of being accepted, go to your primary
doctor, get them to refer you for as many of the tests as possible. Tell
them everything about your discomforts and physical ailments... even the
embarrasing ones (I get to do this on the 9th of next month..shiver) ..
get the reports AND your medical records, send them in with a letter
detailing
your issues, your diet history, your family history and your doctors
recomendation. This should give you a good whack at getting it. But dont
be discouraged by a rejection, appeal .. sometimes, from what
i've read around the web, they just want to make sure you are serious
about NEEDING this operation and that it is not (in their words) Cosmetic.
GOOD LUCK!!
