Question:
I am 16 months post op with no problems except I have been diagnosed with silent
reflux. Does anyone know what could be causing it, and how we can have it when we don't use the bottoms of our stomaches anymore? I had a RNY. Thanks. — JAN C. (posted on July 13, 1999)

YOU HAVE A SMALL STOMACH THAT STILL CONTAINS GASTRIC JUICES.SOMETIMES FOODS
THAT YOU EAT CAN BUILD UP SOME PRESSURE AND CAUSE THE CARDIC SPINCHTER TO
OPEN SLIGHTLY AND ALLOW SOME OF THE 'SMALL' STOMACH CONTENTS TO COME BACK
UP(REFLEX).hope this helps if you would like a list of some of the foods
feel free to email me.

To prevent GERD:eat small frequent meals, drink liquids 1 hour before\after
meals .refrain from lying down or bending over, particularly after eating to
elevate stomach pressure.Refrain from wearing tight fitting clothes.Limit
alcohol, fat coffee.Avoid acidic foods and juices that irritate the
esophagus such as orange grapefrt, tomato jc when experiencing symptoms of
reflux.Refrain from smoking cigarettes.Sleep with head of bed
elevated(keeping chest higher helps to prevent reflux.

The thing is the stomach is still in used by the body. Your old stomach
still produces some acid that help digest food later down in the rest of
the bowel where it is reconnected by the anastomosis. I am 16 months out
post Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and I still at least twice a day have the
feeling of acid rising in my bowel down by my old stomach. I had never had
acid reflux before the surgery. Its just the way we are put back together.
My doctor has put me on a medication called Protonix, I take it twice a day
and since I started not once have I felt that feeling of acid in my
stomach. Hope this helps :)
