Question:
I am scheduled to have surgery on July 27th, and we have our vacation planned for Aug

the 19th. I am wandering if I should be recovered enough by then to enjoy myself? I am having lap rny. The nurse at the Dr's office thinks I will be. Would like to have some other opinion's, because I want to feel good while I am on vacation.    — Tammy37 (posted on July 14, 2005)

You should be fine. You might have to take it easy in the afternoons and possibly take a nap. But go have fun and eat carefully. STORY: I had my LapRNY on Nov 29 2004 and then went out of town for the Big 12 Championship Game the following weekend. As well as on a cruise, the first weekend in Jan. Had a great time on both and no problems with drinking my liquids for the first trip/ eating on the second one. Lise

You should be fine for your vacation, unless you plan on mountain hiking in the Himalians, scuba-diving in Jamaica, or taking a gourmet cooking class in Rome. Your diet will be pretty restricted, so plan accordingly. If you are flying make sure you do leg exercises while on your seat. Good luck in your surgery!

Well, you might feel ok but you will probably be on a limited diet still, ie: liquid, pureed or soft. Just keep this in mind.

Honest opinion here: If it were me, I would reschedule my vacation. Only because I know I personally was very tired for a while, since the first month is normally liquids only and there's not much nutrition going on... not to mention your body is recovering from major surgery. Even though it's lap, HUGE changes have been made inside. Different people have different recoveries, definitely... but I still think that's cutting it rather close... my two cents :-)

Seven days post op I also went on a vacation which required a lot of walking. I just took it easy. Went back to the hotel when I needed to nap, which was often. Just make sure to stay hydrated. I had a few dizzy spells which were attributed to not enough water/fluids.

Tammy, I am 3yrs post up I had the open, but I have a mom and 3 aunts and 2 cousins that have had the lap and they were all up and moving around well after a week. I think you will do find pending that your vacation isnt white water rafting or something..Ha Ha Just take it easy I am pretty sure you will be just fine by then. My mom was bending over and tying her shoes on the 3rd day. Wich I found amazing having the open bypass I could not even bend over for the first two weeks.

I am having my surgery on July 27th also, and I have a short mountain retreat planned for August 12th and 13th. I also hope that I will feel like going.

I had my surgery on June 27, 2005. I am not back at work yet. I am doing very well, However I do not feel like going on vacation. It is also such a change in our eating habits. I guess it depends on how active you are planning to be on vacation. I still cannot where clothes around my waiste the entire day.

You may be physically able to go on vacation, but the change in eating habits may make you miserable trying to get meals in restaurants or in other's homes. It took me 2-3 months to get where I was comfortable eating out or outside of my comfort zone.

I had surgery 5/2/05, and was in Disney World by 5/23/05. I had a blast, but be sure to plan ahead, because meals were challenging.

I had lap RNY as well, back to work in 4 weeks with no problems. I think the biggest challenge will be the new eating habits. Kind of a lot to get your head around at first.

I WENT ON VACATION ABOUT A MONTH AFTER SURGERY AND DID O.K., BUT YOU MAY HAVE SOME PROBLEMS WITH FATIQUE, SO ALLOW YOURSELF A NAP IN THE AFTERNOON AND MAKE SURE YOU GET IN YOUR VITAMINS-ESPECIALLY YOUR IRON AND DRIMK YOUR PROTEIN DRINK. HOPE EVERYTHING GOES WELL FOR YOU!
