Question:
We are scheduled to go on vacation July 30th-August 7th, but my dr. may want to do my

lap rny before that, should I go ahead before vacation, or wait till I get back. Just worried I may be sick alot. Any suggestions on this? I am doing my pre-op diet now. Just need to see the dr. to make sure I am not insane ha!    — Tammy37 (posted on June 20, 2005)

Tammi, You didn't post when you were having your surgury, but, by the end of July you should be feeling fine. Your eating habits will be different, but, you should be fine with everything else. Marilyn, the Bearlady

Tammy, I had that same dilemma. I could have the surgery 2 weeks before I went on my family vacation or have it a month after I got back from vacation. What made my decision was the fact that it was a road trip and we would be out of town for 2 weeks and on the west coast. I also wanted to be stress-free for my vacation since I hadn't had a real vacation in over 10 years. So I picked the later surgery date. Which ended up being the best choice cause I was very tired and drained the first two weeks, physically, and also mentally because of having to figure out what I could and could NOT eat. Also, my abdomen hurt alot during the healing process and I had to wear a binder for two weeks just so I could walk around. This was just my experience. For you, you just need to ask yourself how good is your willpower and strength and how quick do you usually heal? How far will you be from your doctor's office? How is your pain tolerance? - I was on the pain meds for a week. Think about it, only you know the answers to those questions. Good Luck. Kelly

you would be about 40 days out of surgery, and that is what i am now, and I am eating pured foods, and soft solids, I am doing fine health wise, so as long and you take your vitamins, drink your water, and intake your protein, you should be fine. also depends on what type of vacation, and foods that would be available to you.

Hi Tammy- From what Ive seen with close friends that have had the surgery- (friend is now 5wks) walking is good- but still cannot bend over and the first four weeks post op -recovery was slow - everyone responds in recovery differently- which cannot be predicted - so that has to be your concern- how well do you think you would recover -I myself would want to have an uneventful recovery time. I would also want to enjoy my trip worry-free without worrying if you accidentally pull a muscle or eat something and it gets stuck - I would want those issues at home, not while I'm traveling. Good luck! Donna

I personally would wait until after my vacation to have the surgery. I would want to be in town near my surgeon/hospital in case issues arise.
