Question:
Does anyone else have a heart rate problem after eating.
I am two years post op and for the past 6 months or so I have been having a problem after eating. Whenever I eat (usually a big meal), I immediately get a pounding headache and my heart pounds really hard and my pulse quickens. My blood pressure remains in the normal range, but my pulse is accelerated. Usually if I lay down for an hour or so, it subsides a little. I was just wondering if anyone else notices this. Thank you. — Gail M. (posted on February 8, 2005)

my bodies way of *dumping*

I dump in the same way. It is what or how much you are eating. Most of
the time it is because I have eaten too much or something with too much
grease.

That is what happens to me if i eat to much of something with grease or
sugar in it. Just watch what you eat very closely and eliminate foods that
conatin grease or sugar and see if that helps. Have a great day, I know I
am.

I'd say you're dumping . . . why are you eating a "big meal"?
Don't you have restiction, or are you drinking with meals?
I know if I go back to eating unrestainedly, I'll get fat again. I'm also
2 years out . . . can't eat "big meal". And dump frequently, not
from eating too much, but from too many carbs. It's usually the *BIG NAP*
version, not the palpitations kind . . .

I just wanted to you let you know that I have this same situation. Pulse
rate goes out of control ALOT and let me tell you, doenst matter if I eat a
little, alot, or the right vs wrong things, it happens quite often...most
times that i eat a meal. If i snack I usually dont get that. I dont eat
alot at a time but i still do have high blood pressure and i think with a
full stomach I am feeling the body working hard at digesting the food I
just ate. I think i had this problem BEFORE the surgery. Kerry, lapRNY

I to have the same problem sometimes and I guess it is from eating to much
or eating the wrong foods

I am only about two months out, but believe what you are experiencing is
dumping. Happens to me when I have exceeded the amount my pouch can hold.
The only thing I can add, is first...eat less to avoid it happening...but
if it does happen to me anyway, I take one half of some anti-anxiety
medication, I have been prescribed. This is just my solution. Might want
to ask your physician.

All of the replies think it is dumping and they are probably right. If you
are not sure..then take your pulse at different times of the day, other
than after eating. Before RNY my pulse ran about 60-62 and since
immediately following RNY, my pulse has been 90 - 120. The doc put me on
Toprol XL to slow it down. Prior to surgery I had uncontrolled high blood
pressure for 25 years and I was on 3 different BP meds and 2 fluid pills
just to control the pressure. Now my blood pressure usually runs about
98/62. It makes me feel really sluggish, but at least I feel better about
whether I will have another stroke or not. I recommend you check your pulse
to be sure it is not racing all the time.
