Question:
3 mos post op can I take Omega 3
I recently hurt my back, the chiropractor wants me to take Omega 3 since I can't use Ibprophen or aspirin, has anyone been using this since having RNY surgery? — Denise B. (posted on January 22, 2005)

I haven't had the surgery yet, but isn't Omega 3 a fish oil?

Hi, I have severe back problems and am taking the omega 3. It is a fish
oil and it does cause some upset in ppl who've never even had the RNY. I
found a place that carries a super-charged formula w/ vitamin E and is 100%
all natural w/ no fillers or synthetics so the absorbtion rate is better.
Some tips I was given......take your pill prior to eating your largest meal
of the day or refrigerate your pills to thicken the oil..this will help
keep the fishy oil from coming back up (burping) or from leaving a bad
taste behind. This is the main reasons ppl don't take Omega-3s and it's a
shame because it's essential in joint health. Email me if you would like
more info on the brand I use. [email protected]

I take Omega 3 oil (1 tablespoon) in my protein drink every morning. I
would start out with a teaspoon and see how you handle it. You can mix it
with your oatmeal, yogurt or soup. I would not take a pill. Liguid is
better for us! I take a liquid iron, Omega 3 and the rest of my vitamins
are chewable. Again, it is better for our stomachs. Big pills will hurt
our stomachs. Go to a health food store for this not GNC. NOW has a great
Omega 3 liquid and it doesn't taste fishy. Good Luck to you. I'm 19
months post op and have lost over 190 lbs. Keep exercising! :-)

I recommend the Coromega for omega-3. It's an orange cream - does not taste
like fish and no fishy burps. You can also buy whole flax seeds and grind
them and add them to things (but don't cook with it - cooking changes the
structure and you don't get the EFA benefits anymore). Flax is a good
source of all the EFA's not just the omega-3 and it provides lots f fiber.

21st Century makes an Omega 3 Fish Oil supplement that is reflux free. It
is enteric coated to avoid upset stomach, aftertaste, and reflux. There is
also no fish odor. I've taken it without any difficulty at 2.5 months out.
I think it may be a few dollars more than the others but well worth it!
