Question:
Has anyone heard of long-term Prozac use causing anxiety?
I recently read an article the thesis of which is that prolonged use of certain antidepressants (particularly Prozac)will cause anxiety in people who did not originally present with symptoms. Has anyone else heard of or experienced this? — ZaZa F. (posted on January 21, 2005)

Did you read this article from a medical journal? I would be interested in
reading this. I looked up Prozac in my drug manual at work and one of the
many adverse reactions listed under Prozac is anxiety. I was on prozac for
a year and I thought it "worked wonders" for me.

I took Prozac for several years. I also suffered from anxiety. The Prozac
didn't cause my anxiety, however, it no longer works to relieve depression
the way it did in the beginning, so the doctors put me on another
medication. Also, you have to keep in mind that not all medications work
the same for everyone. Everybody is different, so the outcome results can
vary from one individual to another.

I have taken Prozac for several years. I have to admit I was taking it
haphazardly during the past year. When I went to my pre-op psychiatric
evaluation the psychologist insisted that I start taking it regularly
again. About two weeks after I began daily dosages again I started
experiencing anxiety, trouble sleeping, nervous ticks and shortness of
breath that has not resolved itself. I didn't suffer from these before but
I used to take the Prozac with Buspar which is an antianxiety medication.
I hadn't made this connection until I read your posting. I am going to
bring it up to my doctor. I suggest you do the same!

I had to change to Effexor, the Prozac was not working for me after 10
years.
