Question:
What is the difference in gastric segmentation and lap band?
I know they are both bands with one being adjustable the lap and the other nonadjustable. Which one is better, easier, more effective....Please answer — traciekb (posted on October 25, 2004)

best go to 'communities' on the banner, then click and read about 'each'
surgery. Both have pros/cons that ONLY you can decide which is best for
you.

Gastric segmentation? I've heard it called gastric bypass but I'm not sure
if that's what you are talking about or not. The Lap-Band is an adjustable
weight-loss device they put around your stomach. It is less evasive, and
adjustable. You lose at a slower rate, but some folks don't mind what rate
they lose. Either surgery requires a lifestyle change of better food
choices and exercise. There are successful gastric bypass patients and
successful lap-band patients in this area. As for which one is easier,
better, more effective... those are decisions you need to make after you
study up and research all of your options. I don't think any of them are
"easy" per se, as they all require a lot of work on the patient's
part. Good luck!

The the LAP BAND thats adjustable, and the VBG which isnt adjustable.
Theres one other fixed band. Both fixed bands today arent common today
because of the high failure rate. My surgeon specializes in VBG to RNY
revisions and he states a 5 year 85% failure rate:(

I would recommend the lap-band rather than a non-adjustable band. Having
the ability to make the band tighter or looser depending on your needs is a
huge advantage. I don't think that most surgeons even do the non-adjustable
band anymore. Myself, I am a happy lap-band patient who has lost around 130
pounds.
