Question:
what happens aftersurgery to make you have so much gas
My gas builds up so that by the end of the day it is uncontrollable. Can it be what you eat? — marie S. (posted on September 25, 2004)

In my case, it can be caused by what I eat. Two things in particular have
that effect on me: sugar alcohols like malitol and lacitol and anything
with white flour in it. Like all things though, I know that might not be
your problem. We are all individuals and affected differently by the
surgery and by the foods we eat. Strangely, foods that used to cause gas
for me such as broccoli and onions don't now. Hope you find the answer for
you........I know how painful and embarrassing that can be.

White sugar and white flour give me major stinky gas. It's definitely a
result of the surgery as I never had the problem before. Maybe it has
something to do w/ the fact that foods are no longer digested in your
stomach like before?

Dear Marie,
I don't know when your surgery date was, but for at least 2 weeks after
mine, I had alot of gas. I had an open roux-en-y, and the doctor said that
it was perfectly normal, and that it was because of all the air that got
into my body while the surgery was taking place. If this is the case
with you, the problem should run it's course and be gone soon. Hope this
helped.

My gas problems can be tied to too many carbs or sugars but even when I am
eating well I still have moderate gas. I take gas-X tabs regularly to help
me with the problem.
