Put some artifical sugar of your choice in it. It will flatten most of it and it will taste more like regular. Now that I'm not a new post op, I can drink it without flattening it. But I still like to drink it mostly flat. It's more comfortable.

What does your surgeon say? Mine says never again, some others permit it.

As long as I pour it over a lot of ice, it is fine for me. And before anyone says we should not be drinking it anymore, my doctor knows :) Diet soda to me is like cofee to others :)

I gave up soda 2.5 years ago after WLS. I did this on my own, not per surgeon recomendation. I do not even like the taste of it anymore. Some surgeon say it is ok, while others say no. I think it is a personal decision for each individual. It will not stretch your pouch, the carbonation can and will be released like any other gas producing food or drink. (insert Homer Simpson belch here) It is just uncomfortable for some. Rebecca Perkins 10/03/01

Rosita, I drink pop all the time. I'm 22 months post-op open BPD/DS, though - not RNY. Since we don't dump, and still have a fully functioning stomach - so take that into consideration. I drink my ice cold, and as bubbly as I can get it - and totally love it. BTW, I've lost 205 lbs and virtually all of my co-morbidities. Blessings, dina

I drink diet pepsi all the time it only bothers me if I drink it to fast. I don't drink it flat. I only drink diet the others have way to much sugar and calories.

I say follow your surgeon's advice. Our surgeon's say NO MORE! This is for a few scientifically based reasons: The bicarbonate of soda in carbonated beverages leeches calcium from your system and we WLSers already have enough calcium issues. It also is proven to cause painful ulcers in new post ops. Lastly, if you will take a balloon and put in on top of an ice cold 20oz. diet coke and then walk around with it for 5 minutes or so (don't shake it up - just walk around) you will see how the balloon swells up. This is what happens with our new stomach pouch as well and the result is premature stretching of the pouch. I know lots of folks who drink carbonated beverages but most of them are long term posties. Still, I say always follow your surgeon's advice. Best wishes!

My surgeon says absolutely no soda. After 19 mos. of not having it, I don't miss it at all. My husband laughs at me because when Diet Coke with Lime came out, I tried a sip of it and I can truly say it tasted awful. Tastes change. After doing some reading about it, I'm truthfully glad I quite after reading about what it does with calcium--and we post-ops need all the calcium we can get. It's also very hard on the kidneys. Just ask your surgeon what his position is and then abide by it. That's the best way to go.

I didn't have any soda until I was 8 months post op. Then I had it on a lot of ice. That Diet Coke was really, really good! Now, at 19 months out, I drink an occasional Diet Vanilla Pepsi with lots of ice with no problems. It does not cause the pouch to be stretched, as there is an opening into the pouch, and out of it, so you get rid of the gas in the soda one way - or another!

To Cathy S. Don't judge diet pop from the Coke with Lime! I absolutely LOVE lime. However the coke with lime was the worst tasting crap I ever drank. And this is coming from a true lime lover too. ;)

I've tried a sip here and there of regular diet coke and it still tastes ghastly to me now.
