It is my experience that protein serves 3 main purposes. It promotes
healing, increases metabolism (this speeds weight loss) and helps you stay
fuller longer. If you just don't like protein shakes, there are other
sources available. I personally like the zone perfect bars. They are very
reasonable and a good source of protein. They are available at my area
Wal-mart. Just keep trying different sources until you find one you like.

Not according to my surgeon, PCP or nutritionist. I'm 20 months postop so
can't really tell you from personal experience LONG term the effects, but
so far I'm in excellent health and I don't 'do' shakes :-) If you read my
profile I detail there what I eat. Good luck!

Early on its impossible to get enough protein in after WLS, but within a
month or two you can do it. My surgeon recommends real food because it
provides saiety. that is it expands are pouch and helps us to feel
full.<P> Protein shakes sometimes help those years out to eat less,
seemingly protein loading helps curb cravings.

I'm 2 1/2 years post-op and I've never done the protein shakes or bars. I
just eat regular food but concentrate on protein first. My blood levels
have always come back normal.
