Question:
calorie question
Hi I am now about 14 mths post op and I can eat alot more now of course, but I was wondering about how many calories should I be eating now, I know some of you don't count calories, and I try not too, but it is hard sometimes. I try to eat at least every 3 hrs which averages out to be about 5-6 small meals a day is that too much? thanks for the input, how much are you guys eating this far out, I am worried about gaining in the long run! — Melodee S. This is a question that should be answered by your doctor or nutritionist
because each one of them has a different idea as to what their post ops
should do. But for a matter of reference for you I get in 1000-1100
calories a day and I am 10+ months PO.

I think it depends on your metabolism, how much you exercise and how much
left you need to lose. Like if you are done losing, the goal would be to
get to around 2000 w/ exercise. But if you are still losing, I'd say
between 1200-1500 if you are 14 mos out. BUT you shouldn't listen to us,
it is a question for your nutritionist.

I agree that for a more specific answer you should check with a registered
dietitian. Just remember that there's nothing magic about calories. If
you're gaining weight, then you're taking in too many. If you want to lose
weight, but you are at a standstill, then you're taking in too many. If
you're losing weight, but don't want to, then you're not taking in enough.
If you're losing weight and want to, then you're fine with your calorie
take, and if you're at a weight you want to maintain (neither gaining nor
losing), then you're fine with your calorie intake. It's not the number of
calories that's important, it's the effect on your weight.

Do you want to lose more or are you maintaining? The calorie amount,
though averaging 1200-1500 a day for women, is different for everyone. A
friend of mine who is almost 2 years out has calculated that she needs 1700
to maintain her size 6-8. I personally don't count calories but like you I
try to eat every few hours and it does end up 5-6 times a day. As long as
I keep up the exercise, I have been maintaining within a few pounds of goal
for a good year now. I weigh daily and allow myself that 3 pound window.
If I go above it, I cut out some of my snacking.

I am almost 2 years post RNY and at goal. I made an appointment with a
dietician and had my resting metabolic rate tested. My RMR was 1,360
calories. The dietician did a calculation based on my activity level and
my total calories needed to maintain my weight was 1,700. I track my food
on fitday.com and find that I eat between 1,400 and 2,000 calories per day.
It averages out to around 1700 a day if I keep track for a week. I have
maintained my weight for 8 months. I dont know your stats, but small
frequent meals have always worked for me.
