Question:
I am having open RNY, and I know you have to have tape on your

incision afterwards, but I am allergic to the adhesive....what will they do for that? Any other options? Is the tape that important? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks! :)    — Tina M. (posted on March 13, 2004)

Make sure that they KNOW you have a tape allergy. There are alternatives that are less reactive. Good luck!

Hi Make sure you let them know! I have very bad reactions to adhesives and of all things Batadine(spelled that wrong). My incision looks beautiful ,my doc does a nine incher! He glued mine together. But when I had my Gall Bladder out some one did not see my red tag on my wrist. I was a itching bit%^y ball of hives and blisters for weeks! I was not happy.

I am allergic to the glue on the tape and bandaids. I told my surgeon and I don't know if they used anything different but it was called "paper tape" and I did not have a reaction. It was also easy to take off after soaking it with water in the shower.

Kelly, your doc surely covered your staples up with a dressing for a day or two didn't he? I don't think she was saying her surgeon just tapes people together. I agree with the other poster that paper tapes works well with people that have tape allergies.

This is Tina, the one answering the question- I hope you guys don't think I'm being a pain or am a complainer, but paper tape is the worst of them all. I had surgery on my neck just over a year ago, and had to have my entire neck wrapped because every tape they tried gave me a bubbly, blistery type itchy rash...it was horrible! Thanks for so many answers!! I really appreciate the advice!! :)

Tina, why don't you ask him....every surgeon is different. My incision was stapled, like I think most are and then there were steri stipes over top of them. I was to leave them till they fell off naturally. Unfortunately, for me, my incision burst open and leaked for 3 mos. Good Luck!

Get milk of Magnesia and apply it to your skin and let it dry before you apply tape. I had eye surgery done and that is what that surgeon told e to do when my face was breaking out from the tape when I had to put the eye shield on and off every night. It works. Crazy I know

I have a reaction to most tape. I told them this. The anestiaologist ignored me and still used a techaderm which left a huge blister. The surgeon however, while I had my incision stapled it was covered with a bandage for at least a day, they used cloth tape and everything was fine.
