Question:
I have a question about the rate of weight loss and how much food I should be eating.
I am 3 months out and have lost 50 lbs since surgery (20 of those were in the first 10 days). Compared to some others on this board and in my support group I seem to be losing a bit slowly. That is fine except that I sometimes worry that I will not make my goal which is 135 to 140 (the docs is 170 to 190 but that is too much for me). I dont want to miss my window of opportunity and I am beginning to feel hungry between meals which scares me. I have never thrown up and I can eat more than 2 oz at times. I never get in my 48 oz of water although I do try. Anyway I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar expereince and still made goal and if at 3 months it is normal to feel hungry sometimes and be able to eat more than 2 oz.? — MaryannC (posted on February 12, 2004)

I think you are doing great! You should really try to get at LEAST 64oz of
water.. That will speed up weightloss... I think also around 3 months I
was eating anywhere from 2-4oz at a time (1/2cup of food measured).... I
was also eating between 4-6 mini meals a day... At 5 1/2 months now I eat
the same way.. Feeling hungry somethings and being able to eat more than
2oz at a time is very normal.. It also depends on the type of food you are
eating....

Average weight loss for 3 months is 34-58 pounds. And the surgery is
designed to take 1-2 years to get the weight off you. And it's a tool so
even if it takes 5, it really never stops working if you work it the right
way.

ps. I was eating 3-4 oz by then. At 5 mos I was eating 6-7oz then
mysteriously I am back to 3-4. I think because I am exercising less
intensively I need less food.

Everyone gets hungry feelings back at different times. I'm 5 months post
and started to feel hungry again about a month ago. My son is 9 months out
and hasn't really felt hungry yet! You should try hard to get your
water/clear/decaf liquids up to at least 64 oz, if not more. If you can do
that, I'll bet your hunger feelings will decrease significantly (you may
actually be thirsty and not hungry). I don't think it sounds like you're
able to eat too much, although this varies a lot for folks, too. I don't
look at losing slowly as a bad thing, necessarily, although I know everyone
wants it off tomorrow! However, slower losing allows you time to adjust
mentally to all the changes you're going through, and gives you time to
re-learn some eating habits, and start to plan for when the weight doesn't
just come off "automatically." That's kind of where I'm at right
now. I would like to lose between 25-30 more pounds, but it's not just
falling off like in the beginning, so I'm making some adjustments and
focusing more on the permanent lifestyle aspects of being a post-op. Best
wishes for your continued success. Lap RNY 9/11/03, 254/189/???

I will be 3 months out next week and I have lost 47 lbs. so we seem to be
about the same!! In the last 2 weeks I have only lost about 2 lbs. a
week...and have even increased my exercising at Curves! I USUALLY get in
all my liquids. I seem to be eating average about 1 cup of food per meal
sometimes less. I have not had any problems with throwing up or anything,
either. I have had pain a couple times where my pouch is; I think because
maybe I ate too fast. I guess everyone loses at a different rate, but I'm
glad to see someone else is about where I am! Good luck to you!!

Maryann, we share same approximate Post-Op - you are within
"normal" ranges on all your fears. I know you will make your
goal.
As for the water issue I give up a meal for fluids - since I hate waiting
30-40 mins between meals. Fluids are very important even before WLS. GOOD
LUCK - email me if you want more details about my weight lost.
