Question:
Has anyone been told Lupus patients can't have WLS?
I have Systemic Lupus. I hope to find out if my question is correct or is it possible to have WLS. I'm researching right now & hope to gain a better knowledge to become prepared...if I'm excepted for LAP RNY. — Jennifer M. (posted on January 14, 2004)

I don't know the answer, except I do know someone (in my support group) who
has the lapband and has Lupus (along with other medical problems.) She has
lost most of her weight now. If you can't get approved for RNY, try
looking into the Lapband. Sheryl

I AM A LUPUS PATIENT. I HAD OPEN RNY ON MARCH 7, 2003. SO YES YOU CAN
HAVE SURGERY IF YOU HAVE LUPUS. I ALSO KNOW OF ANOTHER LADY THAT HAD
SURGERY WITH LUPUS. SHE CAME TO ONE OF OUR SUPPORT GROUPS. I HOPE THIS
HELPS.

I also have SLE and had open RNY in February of last year. The WLS has
helped my Lupus tremendously as I have much less stress on my joints. I
had the beginnings of a flare-up about 6 or 8 months post-op, but it never
really kicked in to high gear. I think as long as you are not in a
flare-up at the time of the surgery you should be fine.
