Question:
I thought I was doing good....
Hello - I am 12 weeks out open RNY and I have lost 55 pounds. I thought that was pretty good and on schedule... but my mom told me that when she was at 3 months, she had already lost 70 lbs, and according to the weight loss planner on this site, I should be at 70 lbs lost! I also checked out a few other sites... http://www.thinnerself.com/files/Expect_Chart.htm -- according to this one, I am only on track to lose 53%!!!! How sad is that? The only site that gives me good news is http://clos.net/predict-wt-loss.htm -- this site says the average weight loss after 3 months is 56 lbs. I would like other's opinions on my weight loss, please. I feel wonderful and I've gone from a size 28 or 30 to a size 26 and some 24s! So, either way, this surgery has already been a success for me and I would do it again in a heart beat! But, I would like to know some opinions on if you think I will make it to goal. I started at 325 and my doc's goal for me is 180; my personal goal is 160 or less. Thanks in advance! ~ Sarah 325/270 -- 9/18/03 open RNY — sibarra (posted on December 11, 2003)

Sarah, I have recently posted a question just like yours. I got a lot of
great answers and just in the last few days have begun to feel good about
myself and my weight loss. Everyone told me not to go by the planners. I
felt the same way you did about being afraid that I wouldn't make it to
goal. You and I had surgery on the same day and I have lost 51 pounds in
twelve weeks. See, so you've lost 4 pounds more than me. I started at
320, so our stats are close. BTW, we are only one year apart in age.
Well, I think you're doing great! I think I'm doing great! Hell, I think
anyone who's losing steadily is doing great! Don't worry about how much
other people have loss and certainly don't take those weight loss planners
to heart. Just keep up the good work. It sounds like we have a lot in
common. If you ever want to talk, please email me. Good luck and
continued weight loss to you! ~Kristy (lap rny 9/18/03 - 320/269/168)

Sarah, I also wanted to add: CONGRATULATIONS on your marriage! I wish you
and your new husband all the happiness that a life can give. Also, I
wanted to remind you that you still have one more week of losing before
you're actually three months out. December 18 would be three months and
that's still a week away. See, you're weight loss is higher than average.
It's wonderful!

I guess this makes me one of a triplet (All had surgery same day and close
in age). LOL , Sarah, I would not stress, your body is a machine that is
learning to function with new plumbing. I am sure you will see that we
three are all going to leap frog around each other's weight loss and inches
lost. I am not far from you at 62 lbs lost. And if you think about it we
all have our own flux in weight during the given month. Just treat your
body right and it will do right by you!

Let me tell you about this site's weight planner. For about four to six
months, I was wayyyyyyyyyy behind, then i cayght up and am now about five
months ahead of what the weight planner says or even more. Honey, don't
compare your loss to your mothers. You will go madddddd.

the weightloss planner is a computer program NOT a real person hahaha. if
you look at others who had the surgery the same time as you did, you will
see your right in the middle of the average. also...some people may lose 70
pounds in the first 3 months, but then have to fight for ever other pound.
i myself have been slow and steady(2-4 pounds a week). also if you look at
the different rates and ways people lose they all end up pretty much with
the same amount of weight lost by one year.

Hiya Sarah, I started out the same weight as you (well 2 pounds more) I was
also wearing 28/30's...I would say- don't go by those WL planners. I had
lost very rapidly at first (78lbs at 3 months) but once I hit 6 months- it
took me another 6 months to lose 50 pounds- My doctor did not set a goal
for me, but I was thinking ANYTHING under 200 (even 199) would be GREAT-
once I got under 200- I figured at 5'8", that 164 will put me at a
"normal" weight- so that is now my goal.......Just take it one
day at time- don't be a slave to the scale- You've got plenty of
time....Best wishes Kim

Those weight planners don't work because they are only based on 18 months
of loss.
3 months average loss is 34-58 pounds. It's nice that your mother is doing
so well, but even you are a high average loser.

Sarah, 55lbs in 3 months!!? That is super! I am scheduled for surgery in
February and I can only hope I can do as well!! After reading your post
and another's post with the same concerns I have decided not to even go
near a weight loss planner. I haven't looked at one and won't. I think
they set you up for failure and we are all so hard on ourselves to begin
with. I have been 294lbs for so long (20+yrs) that if it takes me a year
and I only get down 100lbs I will be thrilled!
y goal is 160 and I think it is attainable but anything will help not only
my health but my self esteem. My sister had this surgery last October and
our stats are the same ( 5'6" 294 40 and 41yrs old) and she is down to
165 with 15 to goal. I will not weigh everyday and will not look at a
planner as they drove her crazy and ruled her life. I will be grateful for
every pound lost. Please be patient and I know you will succeed! Happy
Christmas!

You are doing great. I am about 15 weeks out and have lost 55 lbs. I
started at 284.5 and feel so much better. I started in size 24's and wore
a 20 this week!!!! YEAH Can't wait to get into 18's. Keep up the great
work and we will get there just like the others but maybe it will take a
week or two longer. :) SMILE and GOD BLESS!!!!!

****ORIGINAL POSTER**** Thank you to everyone who posted to my question!!
I truly feel 110% better!!!! And, WOW!, Kristy and Susan -- we really are
a lot a like!!! :o) It is nice to "meet" others that had surgery
on the same day and are close in age.
I am making a vow to myself that I will stop focusing on the planners! I
will be happy with whatever weight loss God blesses me with!! I will focus
on how much better my life already is and the personal emotional goals that
I have already reached in only 12 weeks!!!
Again, thank you everyone for making me appreciate my journey even more!!

You are doing great. When in your life would you have ever even dreamed of
losing 55lbs in 12 weeks,It is unheard of.I am only at -96lbs at 6 months b
after having alot of problems the first two months and being on nothing but
liquids for about 2 months.don't let anyone get you down, that is when you
will get upset and lose focus on you!!! which that is the person you done
this for in the first place. If you lose focus on why you did this then you
probabbly will fail even with the great tool you have been so lucky to get,
at least that is how I feel about my surgery, Because there are so many
people that want and need this surgery that don't get it for what ever
reason. Hold your head high because you are doing GREAT.

next time your mom compares the two of you give her a short lesson in
genetics - because although the two of you may be genetically similar you
are VERY different people. Remember, there is only a 2% difference between
humans and apes. Genetics are amazing things :>)
