Question:
HAS ANYONE WHO HAS HAD SURGURY COME DOWN WITH THE FLU?
I AM WONDERING IN ANYONE HAS HAD THE STRAIN OF FLU THAT IS GOING THE COUNTRY? WHAT HAPPENS IF ALL YOU DO WITH THIS FLU IS THROW UP AND CANNOT EAT A THING? I HAVE HAD MY FLU SHOT AND PRACTICALLY EVERYONE IN MY FAMILY HAS THE FLU. I DO AVOID THEM AND WASH EVERY 15 MINUTES, BUT AM CONCERED WITH MY INTAKE OR LACK OF BEING ABLE TO TOLERATE ANYTHING IN MY STOMACH. — Mary M. (posted on December 5, 2003)

When was your surgery? If you get the flu, just concentrate on staying
hydrated.

Just wanted to mention this: While it's a good idea to get a flu shot, the
real flu does not normally cause vomiting. "Stomach flu" is an
inaccurate name; it should really be called gastroenteritis. Most cases of
"stomach flu"/gastroenteritis are caused by food-poisoning OR by
accidentally ingesting the fecal matter germs that are spread by people not
washing their hands after using the bathroom (I know that's really gross
but it's true). The best way to protect yourself from gastroenteritis is to
wash your hands frequently, especially before eating, which it sounds like
you're doing.
As for the nourishment issue, I don't think that there is anything to be
worried about if you can't eat for a few days since most of us have plenty
of nutrients in storage from our fat. The important thing is to avoid
becoming dehydrated. If you can't keep any liquids down, I'd definitely
suggest calling your doctor.

I was going to echo last poster...I had flu over Thanksgiving, no throwing
up. Headache, body aches, fatigue, cough...sure. Won't kill you. Like
with everything else, HYDRATION IS KEY.
