Question:
I would like to hear the success stories from others like me.

I had lap RNY on 4.10.03, I am down 85 pounds. I started at 5'6, 290 pounds, and a BMI of 47. I would like to hear from those who stats are similar to mine, and made it to goal, or surpassed their goal. Iam struggling with emotional issues right now, my brain will not cooperate with me at all. I am 5 months post op, and trying to take this lifestyle change all in. I think if I heard from others, that made it, and are living life to the fullest, it just might put a smile on my face today. Thanks in advance! :)    — EHarding (posted on September 16, 2003)

Hi,I had my surgery on March 24,2003 and my starting weight was 270 pounds. As of this morning I have lost 97 pounds.I have had to struggle for the last 2 months.I believe it is because I now can eat a lot more than I could in previous months.I have heard of people joining weight watchers or something similar to it to train themselves on weight control.I would love to hear more about your journey.Congrats on your loss.

My BMI started at 47 also (5'4" and 283 lbs.) The first year is a real mind game for some of us, I had a hard time when the weightloss slowed (but it always picked up again) and I still have a hard time with body image. (I wear size 8 jeans - a few size 6's and mostly size 4/6 shirts), now a year ago I never would have thought that I would be at this point. I really does happen so fast. Emotionally I needed to seek counseling because no-one else understood that I just don't see myself as this size (I guess I focus more on what the naked me looks like....that's another issue for the shrink....lol) Just focus on the things your body needs right now and take care of yourself, the first year is a roller coaster of emotions, but it does get better. If you ever need to chat, feel free to e-mail me.

I actually don't match your stats, but I'd like to support you from another angle. You are not alone in having to deal with emotional issues and please give yourself credit for taking on this huge challenge of lifestyle change. My mother always reminds me how courageous I was to have had the surgery. This goes for all of us. No matter how much research we do and how ready we feel to take on the surgery, you just can't know what issues you will have to deal with. Your progress so far is incredible - keep up the great work!

That's pretty good. I started at 324 and lost 85 at 6 months post. The greatest advice I can give is to keep your sense of humor throughout this whole process. Girl you will never be satisfied. I am at goal. Down 170 pounds since June 26, 2001. Maintaining. Up and down the same few pounds but no big deal. See a shrink once a month. Met my soulmate, getting married next July. Lots of good stuff going on. Always want to lose 10 more pounds but you know what...at 155 pounds (5'6) this is the size I was at age 12. 12!!! You'll be fine. Learn to laugh at yourself and realize that as long as you're doing the right thing 85% of the time, you'll be cool. Good luck and God Bless!

You are off to a great start!I had my surgery 11 months ago. In a few weeks I will be celebrating my 1 year anniversary and what a year it has been. I started out the day of surgery with a 44.1 BMI 5'6" and 275, although I was 285 not long before the surgery. While I was losing it seemed that it was going off so slow. But less than a year later I passed my original goal of 155 and now weigh 147. I'm still losing and I feel great!!! I wear a size 6 pants now and never dreamed that I could even make it to this size. (always thought I was big boned.:-)) If you read my profile, it seemed as though it was coming off so slow. I would compare myself to other losers and think that I was a failure. It's tempting, but don't do it. I still feel like I woke up one day and found myself in a size 6. Keep reminding yourself, you can and will do it! I am dating now for the first time in 7 years and he thinks I am sexy. What a trip. Are the emotional issues gone?? No, but he is helping me to work through them. I still feel flawed, but less and less each day. For me life is just beginning at age 44.

I started at 5'7" and 277. I am now 8 months post op and 165 so that is a loss of 112. I am less than 20 pounds from my original goal and have reconsidered not losing quite as much as I had first planned on losing. I need a tummy tuck and I am already a size 10 at 165 so I may only lose 10 more before getting ready for that TT. The emotional issues are by far the hardest to deal with as old habits die HARD and a lifetime of them takes a long time to change. I will share one nice story with you though. I was out to dinner with my husband and another couple this weekend and there was a live band. Every one was tapping a toe or bopping but nobody would get out on the dance floor. 8 months ago I would have been embarassed to even go out to eat but who do you think was the first person on the dance floor Saturday night in front of 200 other people? That's right, ME! You are doing great and keep up the good work. Nobody on this sight was sprinkled with fairy dust and went on their merry way. We all were MO and we all have issues. Thank God for support!

Erin, first of all let me congratulate you on your awesome weight loss. I am 5'7" and had surgery on 1/31/03, with a starting weight of 274. At 22 weeks, I had lost 82 pounds and never thought I was going to "make it". As a matter of fact, there are still some days/weeks that I think I am never going to get to my 'ideal' weight of 147, even though I've lost 112 pounds and am still losing 2-4 pounds a week! But you know, last week, I realized that even though I have told myself, "another 20 pounds to go", for what seems like months now, that in all reality, I only have 15 pounds to go! I also have been a "size 12" for months now. Oh, the mind games we play! I went shopping (at a thrift store) for 'new' clothes this weekend and everything I bought was a size 8 or 10...not a 12 in the bunch! The funny thing is that when I see them on the hanger, there is no way I can even begin to imagine them fitting me. So, hang in there, it does get better. In the mean time, remind yourself of all of the things you weren't able to do 85 pounds ago. Dig out some old pictures and do a happy dance. Just remember that the ride isn't over yet, and, yes, your brain will join you somewhere down the road! Good luck to you on your journey.

Congrats sweetie on losing 85 lbs. so far. I started my journey on Oct. 2nd 2002. Almost 1 yr. out already. Weighing in at 289 lbs at 5'7 1/2. I'm now down to 161 lbs. and still going. Slowly, but its still going. I plan on making it to my goal of 145 lbs. after the plastics. I'm a size 12 Lg. top and loving it. I've never been this small ever!! Before I had surgery I was terrified of going back to college, but now I'm happy to say I'm enrolled in nursing. I remember those first few months when you wonder what the hell you did and why did you do it, but it does get better. You'll start to be able to eat more and live life more. It just takes time. Your doing fantastic. Good luck to you!!
