Question:
Bad Taste In Mouth?
including protein, but for the past several weeks, whatever I eat tastes awful to me -- even water! And I am talking about foods that I really like. I drink a protein shake in the morning, which tastes awful, and thought maybe it was killing my taste buds for the day, but I don't think so. Does anyone have any insight as to how long this food-revulsion feeling stays? I would really like to sit down to a meal with a piece of meat or chicken and not have it taste like sawdust. When that same awful taste in my mouth happened to me, my surgeon explained
that it was due to ketosis. The ketones that are produced are found in
saliva and, therefore, fill your mouth. Because of their makeup, it is
kind of like walking around with toothpaste in your mouth; hence, food
tastes really crappy. I found that drinking lots of water helped to wash
some of the ketones away so that my taste buds were totally messed up-- but
overall, for a few weeks it was tough. However, it does tend to mean that
you are burning your own fat cells so it does have a silver lining.
