Question:
I am 18 months post op and don't dump often at all.....
I can eat candy, cake and other sugar filled products (ocassionally :), but today I had got hypoglycemic all of a sudden and got the shakes, and drank a cup of skim milk (which is the best treatment for it) and then had a MAJOR dumping attack on the milk!!! I felt like I was drunk and had to sleep it off for a hour! I felt awful and then got up and had diarrhea. Anyone else ever had this happen? When I eat other sugars I don't have dumping like that. Weird! Thanks! — michelle T. (posted on September 7, 2003)

Hi Michelle, I am only 7 mths post op but I can relate to what you are
saying though. I use to have a problem with dumping all of the time on just
about anything I ate, but now some days I can eat a few bites of sugar
things or sugar free things and not dump at all, but then some days I just
eat a couple of bites of something that has sugar in it and I dump
instantly. Don't know why but some days are just diff thatn others now, and
I don't even try to eat too much things with sugar in it either! Some reg
foods can do that to me too! And about the milk issue, some days are just
fine with drinking it and others I can dump like crazy on it! When I dump,
I get the shakes and sweat and have major diahrea, with a bad tummy ache,
really weird huh! But like I said I can relate! I am not sure what the
reason is for it but I guess it is just how our body reacts to the
changes. Good Luck to You!

I wonder if this was a result of lactose intolerance rather than dumping?

I have done this since day one of my surgery everytime I drink milk, I am
lactose intolerant. Never was before surgery, but became that way almost
instantly. I am now 25 mos out and am still lactose intolerant. I can eat
things made with milk ok, just can not have a glass of milk, it does the
same thing to me everytime. I have adjusted to not drinking milk, what a
small price to pay for something so much more wonderful.

Hi Michelle--it sounds like you're blessed to suddenly have a dumping
experience: sugar is sugar and if you've gone back to eating poorly then
this is a Angel-sent wake-up call. Remember that anything ending in -ose
is a sugar, so lactose is milk sugar and its seems like your Angels are
kicking you off of anything that can affect your blood sugar levels. Try
and think of it as a gift.
