Question:
How many people out there are losing SLOWLY?
I have not really hit any long platues...I've lost an average of 2 pounds a week since surgery. I've tried to up protien, up exercise, up calories, lower calories...yet it's consitantly around 2 lbs a week. I've done exactly what I was told yet I've only lost 60 lbs since having surgery on Jan 2, 03. Going to support groups only makes it worse cause EVERYONE there is doing so much better than me. Is there anyone out there like me???? — m M. (posted on August 29, 2003)

Don't feel bad. As long as you're losing. I'm losing slower than the
doctor thinks I should as well, but he also said it had to do with my age
and beginning weight. If you were considered a light weight to start with,
weight loss is slower. Stick with it. You'll get there.

From personal observation, I've noticed that the post ops who lost a little
slower were more likely to make goal and maintain weight loss. I don't
know if they've done any research on it or not though. I think you're
right the most important thing is if you can keep off the weight loss. I
wasn't able to do it on any diet in the pass and unfortunately I'm having a
heck of a time keeping the weight loss post op. I hope you'll be more
successful and in the long run it will be worth it for you. Good luck.

That's me...2 pounds a week or 10 pounds per month for 10 months. Everyone
has outlost me, even people that only had surgery a few months ago. One
guy in my group has lost my entire body weight (181 pounds) in the same
amount of time it's taken me to lose 107 pounds. Don't get me wrong, I'm
thrilled I've lost 107 pounds, but darn it all, I wanted to be one of the
faster losers. It may take time, but it will come off if you follow the
program. Besides, at 2 pounds a week for 52 weeks, that is still 104
pounds gone in one year...tell me, when have you ever done that in your
life?

I started out with a BMI of 41.7 and at 11 1/2 months out, I have lost 90
lbs. Yes, I feel very slow too, but it is coming off. I have 14 lbs to
goal. Guess we all aren't so lucky to lose it fast.

Yes, I feel terrible about my weight loss....about 30 lbs in 8
weeks....supposed to be down 50 in 5 more weeks for my 3 month post op
visit...not sure how I will lose 4 lbs per week when things seemed to have
come to a screeching halt. I am getting 1000 calories per day and
exercising vigorously 4-6 times per week. I was down 33 lbs but gained 3
back and then lost 1....its maddening. Good luck

Yes, I am also a slow loser. Like you, I've averaged around 2 lb a week as
a loss. Everyonce in a while it'll go up to 3 or 4 lbs, but the next week
will most assuredly be only 1 lb loss or stay the same or even go up a
pound! I had my surgery on Jan 27 and have lost 71 lbs...5 of those coming
from a really bad bout of diarrhea a couple weeks ago though. You aren't
alone. I just figure that at least I'm losing at what the
"normal" weightloss community deems as a safe weight loss pace.
And I certainly could never have managed to lose this much weight before my
RNY!!

I saw my surgeon yesterday. I am at almost 8 months and have lost 70 lbs.
However, I'm 9 lbs from goal and from a BMI that would be "ideal
weight". I wear a baggy size 10 and was a 20 when I had surgery.
I've lost slowly all the way along and will never be 100 lbs loser (I think
I would look emaciated at 100 lbs down). Although I was
"technically" 100 lbs overweight at 40 BMI, I really was only 80
lbs from a healthy, ideal weight (the high end of ideal weight for my
height but perfect for my age and bone structure). I stopped weighing
myself at about 4 months because I was such a slow loser and it was
depressing me. When I saw my surgeon yesterday I was sure he was going to
be disappointed in my weight loss because I know several people who had
surgery with him after I did who have lost close to 100 lbs. He was NOT
disappointed. He was thrilled. He said I looked terrific and my stomach
is flat and I won't need a TT. He was very pleased. I've been beating
myself up because everyone is doing better than me but my story is not
their story and their story is not mine. I say stay off the scale and when
you hear of everyone else's terrific losses, be happy for them but don't
come down on yourself for not losing as fast. Slow weight loss can have
its rewards too. Just be okay with you.

You are not alone indeed. I am a slow looser too and it is frustrating. I
lost 15 lbs week 1, then went for 3 weeks with no weight loss. I am almost
8 weeks out and have lost 30 lbs even though I was not a light weight
(297). But I have noticed that I am loosing inches even when pounds are not
coming off. I guess that's a good trade off ... for now. I decided to weigh
myself only once a month to eliminate some of my frustrations. Hang in
there, it has to get better, right? Take care.

I too am a slow loser. I had surgery 05/02 and I've lost a total of 82
pounds. I still weigh in the 200's and my window of opportunity is closing
rapidly. I just figured out what low carb really means. All this time I
thought I was watching my carbs, but since I got serious and started
reading the Atkins literature on their website, and using their philosophy,
the weight is coming off. I hope this helps. Nothing over 10 g of carbs.
Subtract the amount of protein and the fiber from the total carbs, if that
number is 10 or under, it's alright to eat. I try not to go over 60 g of
carbs a day, usually less.

I would gladly settle for slow weight loss as opposed to none at all! I
have lost 60 lbs from when I had surgery 10/29/02 until about mid-May. I
have been up and down with the same 3 lbs since then. It doesn't seem to
make any difference no matter what I do to change things. I have added a
weight circuit every other day, walk every single day (big dog with lots of
energy), increased the water, upped the protein, practically eleminated
carbs and even had my basal metabolic rate checked. I should be losing! I
am not changing sizes either. I am stuck, stuck, stuck! Just about ready to
throw in the towel. I try to stay positive and think that I am probably in
the best physical condition I have ever been in in my adult life, and I
have been able to get off a lot of prescription medications. It is
frustrating especially when you read about people who lose fast or keep
losing down to goal. I need to lose another 40 - 50 lbs. Just call me
frustrated.

I THINK of myself as a slow loser. I lost an avg of 8 pounds a month but
last month I only lost 3 or 4. I was a lightweight to start with and had
lost about 15-20 pounds before surgery so I just KNEW I would be at goal in
less than a year. Wrong. I am down 115 pounds (by my scales) in 10 months
but I KNOW for a fact I would have lost more had I kept my protein and
water intake up. I lived on mostly carbs for about the last 3 months so I
dont have anyone to blame but myself for my "failure". Now I'm
fighting tooth and nail to get these last few pounds off. If I had worked
my tool like I know I should have maybe I'd done much better. Good luck to
you. ~Sidney~ Open RNY 10-23-02 down 115

I am slow loser. I am ok with it though. I started out at 275 and I am
now 240. I have lost 35 pounds in 10 weeks. I am happy about. I have
neever been able jto lose that much weight do quickly. I remeber when I
did Weight Watchers it took me a whole year to lose 50 pounds.
