Question:
Sorry if I've missed the boat on this but would someone PLEASE explain why I always
seem to experience a runny nose when I am eating and starting to feel full?? Its almost as though I can use it as an indicator to stop eating, that's how regular and often this happens. Am I crazy?? — Julie G. (posted on August 20, 2003)

Did you have the BPD/DS? I've heard alot of people commenting that have
the DS that this is something they have. It's a good indicator that you've
ate too much if you ask for my opinion!!

I had open rny and do this also when I am full. I know when to stop and if
I don't, I start sneezing. It has to do with your pouch being so close to
the tubes that run from your nose to your esophogas. It gets backed up and
this is the way it comes out. Sorry, I don't know the medical terminology
but in layman's terms this is what it is.

Hi There!
I'm 6 months post op from lap rny 2/11/03 and began this around the middle
of my 5th month. When I saw this happening to others I chuckled, then low
and behold *****
It Happened To Me Too!
I must beg to differ from the former reply. I know I haven't overeaten,
when this occurs to me. I still measure every thing I eat and after eating
same quanitites on a regular basis for 5 months, theres little chance of me
overeating to the point my nose runs/sneezes. It's always happens on my
last bite or two left. A built in indicator your full! I feel honored to
have it. LOL Good Luck in your Journey!!! 250/160/140 ******** -90 pounds

9 mos post op here. I've had this since the beginning. It is my
indication that I am full, not that I have over eaten- that is a completely
different feeling all together (though I try to avoid that at all costs).
I always experience this with a 'feeling' in my tummy too that I am full.
I am grateful I have it, though my Dr. (pcp)thinks I am nuts. I don't rely
on it only, assuming it might go away at some point, so I also gage my
'feeling' of fullness.

Hi, Julie, yes I have this too!! It doesn't happen to me every time I eat,
but if I eat too fast or too much, the runny nose/sneezing starts. I had
an RNY, by the way. My doc told me it was just a reaction that some people
get.

Hahaha... I love that some of you said that you feel honored to have this
reaction. I have the same thing. And although at first it freaked me out
(thought I was allergic to food), I now, also feeled honored to have this
built in "indicator of doneness". I also agree that the indicator
for overeating is a completely different ballgame and one that I try not to
attend.

Too funny! The same conversation is ongoing over at yahoo's OSSG grad
board and there are quite a few long term post-ops who still have the
sneezies when they are full. They all agree that it is their stopping
mechanism.
Me? I'm a hiccuper. Many of us hiccup to indicate we are full.

I never have had that one but hiccups, oh yeah! also can anyone say why is
it when I am full after 1/2 - 3/4 cup food, I feel like I need to open my
top button on my pants and loosen my belt?

You are not alone or crazy. I have had that for years, probably all of my
adult life. I think that it is the fact that you are loosening mucus in
your sinuses, that is the only thing that I can figure out. The act of
chewing probably causes it. I have post nasel drip, maybe you do also and
do not even are aware of it.
