Question:
How much fat should we have in our daily diet at 5 months post op??
I am wondering how much TOTAL fat we are to be eating on a daily basis? I know we need 64 ounces of liquids and 60 grams of protein but how much fat?? Thanks in advance!! — Michelle M. (posted on August 9, 2003)

Personally I don't count fat or watch it that closely. I pay much more
attention to protein and carbs. However, I have always chose better cuts
of meat etc and I know that I am not taking in excessive amount of fat.
Some meals more than others, but it settle out. Why are you so concerned
about fat? Are you choosing high fat protein or carbs?

You should not be exceeding 30% of your total caloric intake in the form of
fats. So, if you were getting 600 calories a day, you shouldn't be
getting more than 180 of it via fats. Since there are 9 calories per gram
of fat, that would be 20g of fats. If you want to do it in one step, you
could just divide the total calories by 30 to get the grams of fat (because
30/100 * 1/9 = 1/30). So if you were getting in 720 calories a day, you
would shoot for a max of 24g of fats a day. Hope this helps...JR

Wow John, 30%. I know I don't get anywhere near that. It seems kind of
high but I assume you have this from a reliable source since you always
check things out. I'd say most days I get around 15 or maybe 20 but not
more than that.

Chris - 30% is the maximum - that is as per my nutritionist. Actually, I
also think that it's a standard nutritional guideline as well...JR

If you are eating meat you are eating plenty of fat. 30 % is not a problem
at all when your calories are under 1,000. As a matter of fact I have had
many days over that. I try to hit at least 90 grams of protein a day and
the fat comes with the meat, cheese, etc. That said I do try to keep it
around 30%.
