Question:
Should I be having stomach (or pouch) acid post-op?

I'm 3 weeks out today, I've been doing a pureed/soft diet. I accidentally swallowed a piece of meat that was too large and it hurt! Now it seems like some of my acid has returned. Have I opened my staple line? I'm so scared of having to do this over. I so hope I didn't ruin it. Thanks    — Pambylah (posted on July 17, 2003)

I had a stomach acid problem about 3 weeks out and it lasted until 9 weeks. Per my surgeon, I took pepcid for that period. Acid reflux is common after the surgery. Not everyone has the problem, but many do. If you are concerned that your staple line is open call your Dr.

As a 7+month postie, my dr. prescribes antiacids routinely. In fact, you have to commit to taking them FOR LIFE. He doesn't want the stomach acids to put too much pressure on your new itty bitty pouch. My cousin had the surgery 4 years ago, and she has never had a problem with stomach acids and the doc (same as mine) let her discontinue with her prevacid. I take mine just like the doc says. Maybe one day, I can come off of it. Small price to pay for no longer being MO. Lots of luck to you.
