Question:
Has anyone gotten pregnant after having the laprascopic gastric bypass?
I'm considering this procedure, but worry, because if I decide to have another child how will this procedure effect me and the baby. — Vickie H. (posted on July 16, 2003)

It's best to wait at least 1 year after surgery. Your weight should be
stablizing at that point. There are members online that have had babies
after WLS. This is the main reason I decided to go ahead with the RNY. We
can have healthy babies after surgery. I'd just make sure you have a
high-risk OB-GYN to monitor your pregnancy. Good luck!

Having Lap-RNY will not affect you or the baby's health if you are diligent
and careful in maintaining your health during pregnancy. And like the
previous post mentioned, you should NOT get pregnant before at least one
year has passed. This is the time when you will lose most of your weight
and it would be unhealthy to be losing weight while trying to support a
growing fetus. In the majority of cases, women actually have an increase
in fertility and are much more likely to become pregnant, so having the
surgery does not affect you ability to have more children! I have an email
freind who recently became pregnant with twins after having Lap-RNY 15
months ago. :)

I waited for 2 years, and I ran into a few hurdles- but nothing too tough.
I had my baby on 4/16/03. There is a Yahoo Groups called OSSG Pregnancy,
you should join and ask them all the questions you have. Be forwarned,
your OB/GYN (and any other Doctor aside from your WLS Surgeon) more than
likely knows NOTHING about your surgery and it's effects on your body. It
is best not to expect them to find out either! Sometimes it will be up to
you to educate them. So, start learning about it (much like you did about
your sugery prior to having it) and be "aware" of your
surroundings.

Check out Sharon Brittain's (MI) profile. She is oer a year out and
currently pregnant with twins! She's very good about posting great
nutritional information so if you follow her pregnancy, you'll get a lot of
advice on what to do and not do.
