Question:
How long does it take to drink 8 oz of protein?
I am researching this procedure and this site has been so helpful but if your pouch is on 2-4 oz. how long does it take to drink 60 g of protein a day? — Kim H. (posted on July 11, 2003)

Hi..... as most will say "your mileage may vary" YMMV but for me,
I like to drink a EAS Protein shake for breakfast. They are like 10 oz and
It takes me about 30 minutes to drink it.......I drink it while driving to
work.
Im sure that since its liquid it is passing while I drink it because theres
absolutely no way I can eat 10 oz of physical food in that time amount.

I am 4 weeks out and have found that I can drink a lot of liquid with no
problem. I drink Real Meals protein shakes and one pouch has 60 grams of
protein in it. I was told that we can only absorb 30 grams of protein per
meal so, I drink half mid-morning and the other half late in the afternoon
to ensure that I get all 60 by the end of the day. I mix a 4 ounce shake
each time. It takes me 10 - 15 minutes to drink it...If I go too fast, I
get the hiccups! LOL! Funny, I don't get the hiccups with water...I drink
about 100 ounces of cold water per day.

The first few months after surgery I would split up the Real Meals into
four mini shakes a day. I had trouble drinking more than 4 ounces at a
time. Now at 14 months post op I split it into 2 shakes a day since we
only absorb 30 grams of protein at a time. Go to www.protein-solution.com
for samples and recipes.

I am 3.75 months post op. I make my protein drink with 8 oz skim milk and
about 5 ice cubes in the blender. It takes about 20 minutes to drink in
the evening (although I usually freeze it for 20-30 minutes and eat it with
a spoon). FYI, I can drink (shakes, water, milk, tea, etc.) more later in
the day than I can first thing in the morning, i.e., as the day goes on I
can drink (gulp) more than first thing in the a.m. that why I have my shake
at night. Good luck, I hope this helps!

I drink about 10-20 grams of protein in one drink... and it usually takes
me a couple of hours to get a thick shake down... and I am 18 months
post-op. The thinner ones are pretty easier to squiff down! I just found
some awesome high protein shakes and drinks that are yummy and easy to
drink... email me if you are interested... a friend of mine is selling them
and they are pretty decent price! I can't remember the name of them off the
top of my head, but I am going to go get it now... I've a lot of people ask
me about these... they are SO good, and NO sugar! :~) Anyway... email me or
read my recent profile update for more info! :~)

The nutrionist that I see at my surgeon's office recommends (even after 8
weeks post op) that you shouldn't drink more than 8 ozs of liquid per hour.
Part of the reason is so that it doesn't stretch your pouch. It's not
always easy, but I try to stick as close to that as possible.

I use about 2 to three scoops of protein to four ice cubes and some water..
usually by the time its done in the blender I have well more than 12 oz..
and that takes me about 1/2 hour to get down... as long as I'm paying
attention and keep sipping. I'm so surprised about no more than 8oz of
liquid in an hour.. how the hell would you eat, wait, drink and get all
your water down? I drink at least 40 oz of water in an hour when I'm
working out... my dietician, from my doc's office, says that liquids go
right through you and do NOT stretch the pouch... I'm not sure how they
could.

I use several brands, but my regulars both mix with water. The one is a
bit thicker & I like it that way, 6-8 oz water + crushed ice =
perfection in a glass. When I"m in a hurry, on the run, I use another
one that shakes up in about 4 oz of water. It's thin, very smooth, too. I
guess it goes without saying that they are chocolate, huh?

I use shakes that have 30 grams of protein and I mix with 4 oz of water.
Doesn't take long to get them down at all! Barb
