Question:
Does anyone in PA know if Access will pay for a sleep apnea test.
I have been told by my surgeon that Access will most likely NOT pay for a sleep apnea test and that I will have to pay out of pocket. Has anyone had any experience with this? And is there any way to get this test paid for so I don't have to postpone the process? — Angela N. (posted on July 5, 2003)

If there is medical necessity, then the insurance should pay for it. Sleep
apnea is dangerous, and I can't see an insurance company denying the test.
Sounds like your doc is not very supportive.. If there are indications that
you have sleep apnea (can't stay awake in the day, falling asleep at the
wheel, waking up not feeling rested, complaints from significant other that
you snore too much..too loud etc )...then you should have the test.. and by
the way, most docs are not that insurance savvy anyway.

Angela: You need to check with the insurance company. There should be a
customer service number you can call on the back of your Access card. My
son had Access-UPMC Enhanced HMO, and it covered everything he had to have
done prior to surgery, and everything connected with surgery. It has been
great insurance for him. Good luck.
