Question:
Any experience with Sushi post-op?
I was wondering if anyone has had any trouble eating sushi after their surgery. Thanks for any sharing your experiences. — Jill M. (posted on June 17, 2003)

I have recently bought sushi from the local supermarket and aside from
filling up quickly - probably due to the rice - I have been fine. In fact
its a yummy change from my ergular meals.

I LOVE sushi now. I crave it post-op, but didn't really like it much
pre-op. I think it may be the wasabi that I'm craving for some reason
though, as I use a ton of it :) I didn't try it until I was about 6 months
post-op though.

ooohhhh...I love it! Hated it pre-op (weird, huh?) I buy mine at the
grocery, and end up sharing because I can eat only 4 of the slices, and
they're packaged as 10. My favorite is the Philadelphia rolls, with the
smoked salmon, avacado, cucumber, and cream cheese. Sometimes they'll have
sesame seeds on the outside, other times, salmon roe. It's a great meal,
packed full of protein. If you can stand it, try the wasabi, too, very
hot!!! Good luck ~ Denise 316/153

i'm 6 weeks post op and have had sushi several times. goes down great!
i'll generally have 4-5 pieces (depends on the size, which can vary from
place to place), but i usually eat two pieces with the rice and the rest
without. i've also had agetofu, which is tufo marinated in bonito broth,
and have had shrimp yakitori (shrimp on skewers).

For the most part, sushi feels good in the pouch and goes down no problem.
I can eat suprising amounts of it when I am really hungry. BUT, in me, it
does not seem to digest well at all, it mostly just kind of rots its way
through me. The worst gas I have is normally after sushi and a beer.
Beware! :)

I'm with you Cara! I love the California rolls, but that sticky rice is a
real gas-producer. Goes down no problem, but watch out later. I can't have
the wasabi at all...I have a problem with spicy stuff on top of everything
else. Hugs, Joy

Hi! My husband has been eating sushi since about six weeks out (Lap RNY).
He loves it! One thing he does do, though, is cut about 3/4's of the rice
off/out. It is too filling for the little bit of protien you get! Wasabi?
He pours it on! LOL!! You just have to try it and see! Everyone is
different! Wasabi and sushi don't sit will with me, so I enjoy other
yummies! :~)

watch the rice. my dr's office has a lady who works there, lisa (program
director) and she had sushi at 1 year out and some of the rice got stuck-
she had to be scoped... just be careful, but enjoy :o)

Thanks for posting that great question. I was wondering the same thing
last night as I went out to eat sushi one last time before my surgery
(7/10). I told them I would be in daily for the miso soup!

Sushi is the best! I told my doctor that I had been eating it (with no
problems) and he said it was a great source of protein. Watch out for rice
if you are avoiding carbs!

What a great question! I love sushi - it's a great source of protein. I
don't eat the rice though - got sick on it once and since then, I have no
interest. Also, I'm limiting my carbs. Anyway, my son eats the rice that
I pick off and I get to eat the good stuff!

Try Sashimi. It is Sushi minus the rice! Slices of your preferred fish (
typically tuna or salmon) with no rice. If you ask they will give you other
things to eat it with such as avocado, sprouts or asparagus. Go to a
reputable place that you trust and they will do most anything. Good Luck!
